WWE seems intent on destroying their own women’s tag team division.
I want nothing more than a rich, developed, secondary title for the female wrestlers of WWE. Frankly, they’re too talented not to have multiple prizes to fight over. There has never been a better time in WWE history for their women’s division. It is deep, it has characters, it has absolute talent. Of course, it made sense for WWE to create the Women’s Tag Team Championships in 2019. They had too much talent on hand not to.
We got to see combinations like the Boss ‘n’ Hug Connection, The IIconics, and The Kabuki Warriors hold the belts in the early stages. They had more wonderful pairs in the wings like Fire & Desire, The Riott Squad, and even a returning Divas of Doom! WWE had a multitude of teams at their disposal to develop, giving women not involved in the main event picture something with stakes. The company is historically terrible at giving female wrestlers non-title feuds, so this at least was something entertaining.
Then WWE started making the champs oddball pairings. Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross worked, mainly because we all expected Bliss to stab her in the back immediately and she didn’t. Asuka and Charlotte Flair was… fine. Now Cross, known as Nikki A.S.H. holds the belts with Rhea Ripley as almost an afterthought. An additional trinket for two talented women WWE has no plans for at the moment. Where did the rich tag division go?

Here’s where it went: it got dissolved. WWE released acts like The IIconics and 2/3 of the Riott Squad. I’m still not over them releasing Peyton Royce and Billie Kay, but that’s another article. They consistently split up teams and gave title shots to thrown-together acts. The last straw may have been this year’s WWE Draft. WWE split up Shotzi Blackheart & Tegan Nox when they were the next team up to get a likely title shot. They also split up former champs Natalya & Tamina and Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax (though they were more split up when Baszler snapped Jax’s arm).
WWE has shown a complete disregard for the Women’s tag team championships, and it’s only been two and a half years. The belts should be retired, or better yet combined with the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships, and then kept in NXT. Instead, WWE should create a singles championship for their women’s division.
The title could be a TV Championship, another version of the Intercontinental Championship, or really anything without a damn butterfly on it. WWE has proven time and again the inability or the complete disregard for booking non-world title women’s feuds. Maybe a singles title is something they’d be able to manage.
I want the Women’s Tag Team Championships to succeed. It just doesn’t seem like WWE wants to put in the effort. They’ve squandered having some of the best women’s tag teams you could ask for, and are content to just put the belts on whoever. It could be so much more, but since WWE won’t do it, they should put the belts out of their misery.
