Panthers Week 6 Preview

Last Week against Philadelphia, the Panthers offense stumbled through four quarters, ending up with less than 20 points for the first time this season. Now they’ll be at home taking on a Vikings defense ranked in the top 10 at limiting points per game.

Despite earlier suggestions this week from head coach Matt Rhule, Christian McCaffrey will also be out this game, and was also added to the Injured Reserve. That means the most explosive offensive asset Carolina has won’t be eligible to return in Week 9. Subsequently, Sam Darnold will have to return to more of a productive role in the rushing game like we saw earlier this season.

Injury News

Carolina has also ruled out linebacker Shaq Thompson, who has recently been dealing with a foot injury. Other guys like Derrick Brown, Carolina’s first round pick in 2020, will need to shine today as to combat the Vikings rushing attack led by Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison.

Cook is a fundamental part of the Vikings offense as a whole. Kirk Cousins is visibly more comfortable pushing the ball down field after Minnesota has already established a running game. After what we saw against Dallas, the Panthers will need to improve in this space to pull out the dub today.

Secondary players like Jaycee Horn and Stephon Gilmore will still be out this week. One update on Horn’s status is his foot is making good progress from surgery about two weeks ago. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported earlier this week that Horn should be free from his cast soon, and will be planning to return to the field around the time at the start of the playoffs.

Gilmore will be out another week until he’s set to come off the PUP list. Carolina traded the ex-Patriots cornerback for a 6th round pick a few weeks ago in order to help pick up where Horn will be unavailable.
