NFL 2021: Five Key Statistics for Week 13

What a tangled web the National Football League has weaved after 12 weeks of play this season. There are great races in nearly every division and teams that struggled a year ago have risen up in a big way. This week, playoff contenders Carolina, Cleveland, Green Bay and Tennessee are getting some rest. But there’s still a lot of intrigue ahead.

There are four more divisional rematches this week and a total of seven divisional contests – the latter making up exactly half of the 14-game slate in Week 13. The Buccaneers, Colts, Seahawks and Vikings, respectively, are looking to complete sweeps of the Falcons, Texans, 49ers, and Lions, respectively. So far this season (and it is very early), there have been six completed series between divisional rivals and all have resulted in a two-game sweep.

Both the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets will be seeing green this Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium. The latter is coming off a 21-14 victory at Houston. The Birds are back in New Jersey for the second consecutive week, losing to the New York Giants, 13-7. The Eagles and Jets are meeting for the 12th time. The team from the City of Brotherly Love has won all previous 11 meetings – outscoring the Green and White by a combined 302-177 count.

It’s the current losing streaks for both the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars, who meet this Sunday in the Sunshine State. In the case of the former, it’s been quite a surprise for a team that won seven of its first eight games. Sean McVay’s squad has turned over the ball a combined seven times during their current slump – six of those by quarterback Matthew Stafford. During their 7-1 start, McVay’s squad committed only seven turnovers.

That’s the number of turnovers committed by the surging San Francisco 49ers during their current three-game winning streak. Kyle Shanahan’s club has scored a combined 95 points over that stretch – 30 or more in each contest. And after giving up the football a combined 14 times in their first eight games, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s interception vs. the Vikings last week is the lone turnover by San Francisco in their last three outings.

The resurgence in New England continues as the Patriots have now won six straight games after a 2-4 start. Bill Belichick’s 8-4 team has already won one more game than it did all of last season. Led by rookie quarterback Mac Jones and an offense bolstered by this offseason by free agency, the team has featured a balanced offense. The Pats have scored an impressive 336 points in 12 games. That’s 10 more points (326) than the team managed in 2020.
