WWE rarely lands a mystery well. Here are five of the worst.
This past weekend was all about the egg. At WWE Survivor Series, Vince McMahon showed us all a fancy egg given to him by The Rock. By the end of the night, it had been stolen. Who could’ve taken such a beloved artifact and piece of wrestling history? A priceless egg that Vince loves?
It was Austin Theory.
We found out by the end of Raw that Theory wanted to take a selfie with the egg. Sami Zayn was the one who discovered he was the culprit. The reprimand for Theory was… a shot at the WWE Championship because McMahon said Theory reminded Vince of himself. It was not great.
WWE has a bad habit of doing whodunnits. This one was much lower stakes than some other mysteries that the company has done. With the mystery of the egg behind us, let’s look back on the other reveals in WWE’s history. Here are five of the worst mysteries the WWE has done.

Hornswoggle1: Vince’s Son
WWE set up a mystery around Vince McMahon having an illegitimate son. This was after he was “killed” by his limousine exploding, but WWE needed to backpedal on that after the Chris Benoit tragedy. Vince was told in August he had an illegitimate child, and there were tons of intriguing options. The best one? Mr. Kennedy. He had Kennedy as a surname, had the right swagger, and could’ve used this as a massive push. Unfortunately, Kennedy had a wellness policy violation so WWE had to pivot. They went instead with Hornswoggle, playing it for laughs instead of the big storyline it could have been.
DDP Was Stalking Sara
In 2001, someone was stalking The Undertaker’s wife Sara. They would videotape her out in public or at their home, and Undertaker was rightly furious. On June 18, 2001, the stalker revealed himself as Diamond Dallas Page. That’s right, the nicest person in WCW apparently was stalking another wrestler’s wife. Even ignoring DDP being married in real life to Nitro Girl Kimberly Page, the storyline just didn’t make sense. DDP said he wanted to go after the biggest dog in the yard, but any number of midcard wrestlers would’ve made more sense.

Hornswoggle 2: Anonymous GM Boogaloo
When WWE needs to get out of a storyline, they call on Hornswoggle. The Anonymous Raw General Manager was an annoyance every week for a year between 2010 and 2011. WWE phased out the GM in 2011 without ever revealing who it was. In the buildup to Raw’s 1000th episode, the Anonymous GM was brought back. Detective Santino found it was Hornswoggle under the ring. Why was he such a heel as a GM when he was a face character? Wasn’t there another wrestler or manager who could’ve turned all the heel heat into an extended run? Another wasted opportunity by WWE.
Rikishi Did It For The Rock
At Survivor Series 1999, somebody ran over Stone Cold Steve Austin. The angle was used to write him off television, and someone was going to get the main event level angle with Austin upon his return. That person was Rikishi, a lovable midcarder and the big member of Too Cool. When asked why he famously said he did it for The Rock’s career. They would retcon the angle to say Triple H hired Rikishi to do his dirty work, but the choice changed the way we all viewed Rikishi. His push to main eventer didn’t work, and WWE wanted us all to forget about it.
The Gobbledy Gooker
We end with the original egg. In the leadup to Survivor Series 1990, an egg appeared at WWF shows. At the pay-per-view, it finally hatched to reveal a giant chicken. Hector Guerrero, a member of the legendary Guerrero family, was in a giant chicken suit. He lasted all of a month and went down in history as one of the biggest failed reveals in wrestling history.
