Chicago Bears: Andy Dalton Throws Four Interceptions in Loss to Cardinals

It’s the same old story as the Chicago Bears have costly penalties and too many turnovers in their 33-22 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

The Chicago Bears finally ended their five-game losing streak last week against the worst team in the NFL. Just because that happened, it doesn’t mean they ended their struggles.

This week, the Bears hosted the team with the league’s best record, the Arizona Cardinals. They actually outgained the Cardinals and held onto the ball for about 10 minutes longer, but their troubles of the season continued to haunt them.

The Bears had costly penalties that stalled drives. When they didn’t commit those penalties quarterback Andy Dalton threw the ball to Arizona. He went 26/41 for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, he also had four interceptions. To be fair, the passes were either tipped or fell out of the receivers’ hands, but the passes were off-target to begin with or shouldn’t have been thrown.

All four interceptions resulted in the Cardinals starting their drives deep inside Bears’ territory. Two of them started at the 28, while the other two started inside the red zone. Those drives also resulted in the difference in the game. Arizona scored 23 points off the four turnovers.

The team looked listless and unemotional

As per usual, the Chicago Bears didn’t look prepared to play. This time, however, it was because it looked as if the players are resigned to the fact that head coach Matt Nagy and perhaps general manager Ryan Pace are both lame ducks. The way the team plays, the McCaskey family needs to make a change. The problem is that everyone is waiting until they finally pull the trigger. Until they do, the unknown continues to dominate.

Throughout most of the game, running back David Montgomery carried the Bears offense. Until late in the game, he amassed about 63 percent of the total yards. In the end, he had 141 total yards from scrimmage, which accounted for 43 percent of the Bears’ total yards. He also scored one of the three Bears’ touchdowns. It should have been two but he had a score overturned after a review.

It is understandable that Pace and Nagy want to survive their ordeal. They feel that victories will help them. At this point, though, wins and losses don’t matter anymore. What matters is to look at the young players like Justin Fields, Teven Jenkins, Larry Borom, and Trevis Gipson, among others. It’s time to look ahead to 2022 and form an idea of who on the current roster is good enough to help going forward.

Dalton is a professional. He handled this entire situation very well. He supported Fields when the rookie took over as the starting quarterback. He’s been a perfect mentor for Fields. He has to know, however, that his time in Chicago is now finished. Fields is the guy and, when healthy, needs to see as many snaps as possible.

The same goes for Jenkins. The Bears activated him so now the team needs to get a look at what he can do. Wins no longer matter. Heck, even if they wanted to lose the rest of the season it doesn’t matter. The Bears don’t have a first-round pick. They gave it up in the Fields trade.

The season is now limited to watching the young players. The only real excitement to see is whether the McCaskeys fire him before or after the season ends.
