Know the Foe: Packers vs Cleveland Browns -

Week 15 saw the Green Bay Packers go into Baltimore to battle a feisty Ravens team. In a game that came down to the wire, the Packers escaped with a 31-30 victory. The win clinched the NFC North but the Green and Gold have bigger goals. Standing in their way is the Cleveland Browns. The 7-7 Browns come into town after a gut-wrenching loss to the Raiders. Still the Browns have a shot at the playoffs and won’t go down easily on Christmas Day. Here’s a closer look at this week’s foe.

Offense Hot & Cold

The Browns are one of the hardest teams in the league to assess. When Cleveland is whole and clicking they can play with anyone. Then they times where they lay eggs. The Monday night Raider game tells us nothing of what Green Bay will see Saturday. The Browns were hit hard with Covid and had a hard time fielding a team and they still competed. When Cleveland has their preferred starters out there they have some nice things going for them.

It’s all about the ground attack with Cleveland. They have one of the best duos in the NFL with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Chubb is a bruising workhorse that is over 1,000 yards for his 3rd straight season. More impressive is the dude has a career average of over 5 yards per carry. His partner in crime Hunt has been dealing with injuries this year but he too is dangerous. Hunt runs with his hair on fire. Just a tough 1-2 punch to slow down.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield should be back this week but he is beat up, to say the least. The former overall #1 pick in the 2018 draft has been well, just okay this season. He plays like an old-school gunslinger who is tough and a fierce competitor.

His receiving weapons are another middling group. The group is missing the explosive player to elevate everyone else. Jarvis Landry is a possession-type receiver that does his best work in more of a slot role. Second-year pro Donovan Peoples-Jones has stepped into a bigger role after the release of Odel Beckham.

The Browns run more 13 personnel than any team in the league (1 RB. 3 TEs). Tight ends Austin Hooper, David Njoku and Harrison Bryant are all getting on the field. Njoku is the biggest threat of the bunch with over 400 yards and 3 scores.

Talented Defense

The Packers will have to focus on Myles Garrett in this matchup. It doesn’t get any better at EDGE than Garrett. He is almost unstoppable one-on-one. With 17 sacks on the season, he wants the NFL record of 22.5. Look for Marcedes Lewis to help on the left side. The other side features eight-year pro Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney gets a bad rap for not living up to the high expectations, but this guy is a good player. The sack numbers have never been high but he’s a plus athlete and stout against the run.

The Browns feature one of my favorite 2021 draft prospects at linebacker. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is a powder keg busting with talent. He’s a hybrid S/LB that flies around the field. He is having a nice rookie season and will only get better.

The secondary is also a nice group when at full strength. Denzel Ward is tasked with opponents’ top wide receiver while rookie Greg Newsome has flashed his first-round talents. However, Newsome is out this week, so Greedy Williams will have to step up in his place. Williams is also a nice young player that rounds out this CB group.

The safety group is solid with John Johnson III coming in after a great year with the Rams. Johnson is an assignment sure safety with 3 interceptions on the season. Green Bay will look to get the ball out quickly to slow down the pass rush and challenge these defensive backs.
