Xavien Howard Selected for Third Pro Bowl, Will Start for AFC

Xavien Howard, the Miami’s Dolphins’, and arguably one of the NFL’s, top cornerback has been selected to start in the 2021 Pro Bowl – as long as he doesn’t play in the Super Bowl, the league announced Wednesday.

This is Howard’s third Pro Bowl selection, and second consecutive, in his current six-year career. He was also selected in 2018 and 2020.

Howard is the 14th Dolphin in Miami’s history to be named to three Pro Bowls, joining Sam Madison, Patrick Surtain and Brent Grimes, a news release said.

His selection is the seventh time in the last nine years Miami has had a defensive player in the Pro Bowl. 

Howard has started in 68 of 69 games played in his career and has 26 interceptions in that span, with one returned for a touchdown off of then-Denver Broncos’ Trevor Siemian.

He also has four career forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, with one returned for a score just this year against the Baltimore Ravens. Howard also has 231 career tackles (179 solo), six tackles for loss and two QB hits.

This season alone Howard has 40 tackles (31 solo), four interceptions, 14 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His 14 passes defensed currently ranks fourth-best in the NFL this season.

His two most critical plays this season came in the season opener in New England where he forced a fumble that he recovered as the Patriots were driving inside the 10-yard line with a chance to take the lead with 3:35 left in the game, and then the play on Thursday Night Football in a shocking upset against Baltimore. 

Howard will take the field as a starter in Las Vegas for the Pro Bowl on Feb. 6, as long as he isn’t the Super Bowl…
