Patriots Enemy Profile: Buffalo Bills Wild Card Round

It’s straightforward; you win, you move on. You lose; your season is over. That is what the New England Patriots will be facing Saturday Night.

Can the Pats pull off an upset? They sure can. It will take a much better performance from Mac Jones if New England has any chance of winning. Many times this season, Jones has contributed to their losses with turnovers. When you’re playing a team like Buffalo, you won’t be able to make mistakes and win.

Defensively, the Patriots have not been consistent in keeping opponents off the scoreboard. In the last month of the season, New England played a vanilla defense that wasn’t fooling anyone. Outside of the game against Jacksonville, the Patriots’ defense has been below avarage. Will the scheme change this week? Or are we going to the same? All of these questions will be answered come Saturday Night.

Now, let’s get to know the Buffalo Bills and what to expect come Saturday Night.

In both meetings this season against New England, Bills quarterback Josh Allen played very well. Specifically, he played arguably the best game of his career in week 16 on the road against the Patriots in a game that gave them the inside track to the AFC East. From watching at home, Allen played flawlessly. If he’s a top 10 QB in the league like everyone says he is, New England is in for a long day this week. Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley are Allen’s leading receivers contributing to the offense. Bill Belichick and his coaching staff will have to gameplan how to contain both players. If they fail in doing that, look out for Buffalo offensively to have a big day. 

Defensively, Buffalo has gotten better each week. Ed Oliver and Jerry Hughes are the leaders of their front seven. Oliver has been around the league for a long time and knows what it takes to win big games. His leadership will be called on heavily this postseason. Many of Buffalo’s players were on their roster last year and have a taste of what it is like to play playoff football. Linebacker Matt Milano not only rushes the passer, but he’s an excellent tackler. The Patriots in both meetings this season have established the run. Milano and co. will try to change that narrative by blitzing all night.
