If You Like NFL History, the 2021 Playoffs Are For You

It’s been one wild 102nd season for the National Football League. There were 18 weeks of action for the second time and 272 regular-season contests for the first time ever.

And when the smoke cleared, there were seven different clubs in the playoffs that were not there a year ago. And this season’s 14-team field is loaded with franchises that have won their share of NFL championships, especially when it comes to the Super Bowl Era.

All told, 10 of this year’s postseason entries have hoisted at least one Lombardi Trophy. That includes the five of the six organizations to win at least four Super Bowls. That list is led by the New England Patriots (6) and Pittsburgh Steelers (6), the San Francisco 49ers (5) and Dallas Cowboys (5), as well as the Green Bay Packers (4).

The other five include the now-Las Vegas Raiders (3), the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2) and Kansas City Chiefs (2), as well as the now-Los Angeles Rams (1) and Philadelphia Eagles (1). All told, that adds up to 35 of the 55 Super Bowl titles.

If you want to go all-time NFL history, the Packers (13), Patriots (6), Steelers (6), Cowboys (5), 49ers (5), Eagles (4), Raiders (3), Rams (3), Buccaneers (2), Chiefs (2) and then-Chicago/now Arizona Cardinals (2). That’s a grand total of 51 titles out of 101.

If you include this weekend and next, when the No. 1 seeded Packers and Titans take the field, no three franchises in league annals have made more postseason appearances than the Packers (35), Cowboys (34) and Steelers (33). And entering these playoffs, the all-time leaders in postseason wins are the Patriots (37), Packers (36), Steelers (36), Cowboys (35), 49ers (32) and Raiders (25).

Of course, while it doesn’t factor into the NFL’s 101 titles, the Houston Oilers/turned Tennessee Titans won the first two AFL championships in 1960 and ’61. The Buffalo Bills captured titles in that league in 1964 and ’65. Only the Cincinnati Bengals, who did make a pair of Super Bowl appearances in 1981 (XVI) and ’88 (XXIII), haven’t won a league title.
