The Chicago Bears continue their head coach search by interviewing Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
The Chicago Bears continued their search for general manager and head coach this past weekend. They turned to the Buffalo Bills, hoping some of their personnel could help turn things around for Chicago the same way they did to Buffalo.
The Bears interviewed Joe Schoen for their general manager position. He is currently the Bills’ assistant general manager. We’ll have more on him in another article.
The other interview they had, however, was for head coach. They also turned to a Bills man, speaking to their offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Daboll is the architect of the NFL’s top-ranked offense. The Bills led the league in points scored and total yards of offense. Additionally, they have the number one ranked passing attack. Seeing as how this is a passing league, having the best passing attack is surely a good thing.
Daboll’s name brings excitement to Chicago Bears fans. They haven’t seen much of an offensive attack. they thought they’d have one when they hired an “offensive genius” in Matt Nagy. That didn’t work out, however, as Nagy’s offense consistently ranked at or near the bottom of nearly every offensive category.
Now that Nagy is gone the hope is that the next guy builds up the offense. The Bears have a prized jewel in quarterback Justin Fields. He has the tools to be a star and a franchise quarterback they coveted. Having that type of quarterback makes the head coach job more attractive. After spending a season in a horrible system, the next coach has to do whatever it takes to develop the young man.
Daboll can be that guy
This is where Daboll comes in. He developed Josh Allen into one of the top quarterbacks in the league. This season, Allen ranked seventh in touchdown passes (36) and eighth in passing yards (4,407). Additionally, he ranked second on the Bills in rushing with 763. That total ranked 25th among all rushers and third among quarterbacks. Only Jalen Hurts (784) and Lamar Jackson (767) rushed for more yards as a quarterback.
FIelds has the ability to do the same. He has a strong, accurate arm; he can make the big throw downfield and get big chunks of yards. Furthermore, he has more speed than most running backs. At his Pro Day last year, scouts clocked him at 4.44 in the 40-yard run. That was the third-fastest time ever recorded for a quarterback prospect.
Having Daboll possibly develop Fields gives the franchise and its fans hope. Hope is something that is dwindling in Chicago Bears Nation.
The Bills have the most QB centric offense in the league.
So, if the Bears did hire Daboll, we should expect a system designed around Fields. https://t.co/WDAeHLUf7T

Daboll could use the film of the Bills’ offensive explosion last weekend as his resume. The Bills had 482 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns. They scored on every drive except their last one when they took a knee to finish the game. The punter was basically in the stands ordering hot dogs and beer. The only problem they had was the kicker missing two extra points.
Nagy never built an offense that took advantage of Fields’ abilities. That won’t be the case with Daboll. He tailored the Buffalo offense around Allen and he’ll do the same with Fields in Chicago. Also, the Bears have a better running game than Buffalo. Devin Singletary is their starter and he had 870 yards. He finished just ahead of the Bears’ David Montgomery, who rushed for 849 yards. Consider, however, that Montgomery played in 13 games while Singletary played all 17 games. Utilizing Montgomery and Fields (not to mention Khalil Herbert) in the running game and developing the passing game will give the Bears a potent offense.

Daboll learned from some of the best coaches. He had two different stints coaching under Bill Belichick. He had a variety of positions while under Belichick, including defensive assistant, wide receivers coach, tight ends coach, and assistant coach. With Belichick, Daboll won five Super Bowls.
Daboll also worked one year under Nick Saban at Alabama. There he was the offensive coordinator. The two won a national championship together.
While at Alabama, Daboll got to meet FIelds when he made visits. That means he already met and knows Fields a little. For what it’s worth, Fields follows Daboll on Twitter as well.
We don’t know what the Chicago Bears think after Daboll’s interview over the weekend. After what the Bills did to the Patriots, though, he’s the favorite for the fans. They are salivating with thoughts of what Daboll working with Fields could produce.
