NFL 2021: Five Key Statistics for Divisional Playoffs

Seven games to go in what has been the NFL’s biggest season. A week ago, five of the six teams to play host in the wild card round came out victorious. This week, the top-seeded Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans both take the field for the first time since Week 18. So by Sunday evening, will both defending conference champions still be on course for a Super rematch after these NFL Divisional Playoffs?

A week ago, the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams won their rubber matches with the Patriots and Cardinals, respectively. Last weekend, the Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs knocked off the Raiders, Eagles and Steelers, respectively, for the second time in 2021. Now in the divisional round, the Green Bay Packers, Rams and Bills look to beat the San Francisco 49ers, Buccaneers and Chiefs for the second time this year.

It’s traditionally been called the best weekend of the NFL season. The Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Kansas City Chiefs are the host teams for the NFL Divisional Playoffs. This round of the postseason has undergone many formats. But dating back to 1970, the home clubs own a combined 147-57 record – a .721 winning percentage. And on 11 occasions, home teams have completed a four-game sweep in this round.

Of the eight teams remaining in the playoffs, three franchises – the Buffalo Bills (0-4), Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) and Tennessee Titans (0-1) – are the only remaining clubs that have never hoisted a Lombardi Trophy. That combined 0-7 record by the three clubs on Super Sunday is ironic indeed when it comes to the club from the Queen City. All told, the Bengals head to Nashville this weekend. And the franchise is winless in seven road playoff games.

There was only one unbeaten team at home during the 2021 regular season. The Green Bay Packers were a perfect 8-0 at Lambeau Field this year and averaged 30.6 points per game in their own dwellings. All told, Matt LaFleur’s club outscored their eight foes by a combined 245-134 score. And speaking of one, All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw 20 touchdown passes and just a single interception in eight games at Lambeau Field this season.

Both Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen and Kansas City Chiefs’ hurler Patrick Mahomes each threw five touchdown passes last week in their teams’ wins over the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, respectively. This will be the fourth meeting between the Sean McDermott’s club and Andy Reid’s squad in two seasons. For Mahomes, it was the second time he threw five TD passes in a playoff game (2019 vs. Texans).
