Chicago Bears: Update on Searches for General Manager, Head Coach

As the new week started the Chicago Bears ramped up their searches for a new general manager and head coach. Here is an update on their actions.

There were reports that the Chicago Bears would ramp up their searches for a new general manager and head coach this week. Well, those reports may be correct. The Bears made some moves on Monday and set up some second interviews.

For general manager, the Bears had a second interview set up for Ryan Poles. He is currently the Kansas City Chiefs’ Executive Director of Player Personnel. Now, they set up final interviews with other candidates as well. They now have a second interview with Monti Ossenfort, the Tennessee Titans Director of Player Personnel. They also called back Eliot Wolf, the New England Patriots front office advisor.

The #Bears are interested in speaking again with at least 3 GM candidates. Per me and @MikeGarafolo, Ryan Poles of the #Chiefs, Monti Ossenfort of the #Titans, and Eliot Wolf of the #Patriots are expected for second interviews. Morocco Brown of the #Colts could return, as well.

In addition, Morocco Brown is in the mix. He is a former Chicago Bears front office executive and current Indianapolis Colts Director of College Scouting. He just had his first interview and may likely receive a second interview as well.

The situation with Brown is interesting. There are reports that he and Matt Eberflus, the Colts’ defensive coordinator, could be a package deal. However, the Bears might hire an assistant general manager and that could be Brown.

We must also keep an eye out on Omar Khan, the Pittsburgh Steelers Vice President of Football and Business Operations. The Bears are high on him and he could change a lot if he has a great interview.

Head coach update

In addition to Eberflus, the Bears have second interviews with Jim Caldwell and Dan Quinn. Caldwell is a former Super Bowl champion head coach with the Colts. Quinn is the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. Quinn was also the head coach with the Atlanta Falcons, leading them to a Super Bowl appearance.

If the reports about a package deal with Eberflus/Brown are true, Caldwell, who also was an assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins, could end up as the Bears offensive coordinator.

Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier interviewed for the head coaching job last week. How he did depends on who you ask. There are some who say he didn’t do well in the interview. Because of that, he may be out despite being a popular figure at Halas Hall.

On the other hand, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback indicates that Frazier is among the top names for the Bears.

In spite of the Bills getting eliminated from the playoffs, Brian Daboll continues to be a fan favorite. He ran the third-ranked scoring offense in the NFL and put up 83 points in two playoff games. That total was just one point less than the Chiefs for the top spot.

With the sudden movement on the general manager front, the Bears might be ready to make a decision soon. George McCaskey said he wanted to hire a general manager before hiring a head coach. With all their head coach candidates now free for face-to-face interviews, the Bears might hire the general manager and have that person hire a head coach.
