Second base is an important position in baseball that requires a great glove, footwork on the double play, and the ability to at least hit for average and these days some power. Here is my list of the greatest to ever play in the National League.
1. Rogers Hornsby – He set the standard for the position. He had three seasons over hitting over .400. Five seasons over 100 RBI. His 152 RBI season is best for a second baseman and still ranks 38th all-time. He missed 3,000 hits by 70 but still had a .358 lifetime batting average (2nd to Ty Cobb) mostly in St. Louis.
2. Joe Morgan – He was most well known for playing with the “Big Red Machine” and he may have been 5-7, but he had plenty of power, hitting 268 home runs and scoring 1,650 runs (35th was 22nd when retired) He won consecutive MVP’s and had five gold gloves.
3. Jackie Robinson – He would have won a gold glove if the award existed when he played. He won a championship with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955 but got a batting title and MVP award before that. He broke the color barrier in baseball and played until he was 37. Robinson stole home 19 times in the regular season and once in Game 1 of the 55 World Series.
4. Craig Biggio – This Long Island star made his name in Houston. He started out as a catcher, he had over 3,000 hits, 668 doubles, and 414 steals. He won four gold gloves as well.

5. Ryne Sandberg – The Phillies traded him to the Cubs and the rest was history. His Phillies managerial career was bad, but his nine gold gloves and extra-base hits get him on the list.
6. Chase Utley – This guy gave it his all. His four consecutive 100 RBI or more seasons a World Series title with the Phillies in 2008 and another trip to the Fall Classic in 2009 is what gets him here.

7. Frankie Frisch – Known as the “Fordham Flash” had a .316 batting average with 2,880 hits and four WS titles; two with the New York Giants and two with the Cardinals.
8. Jeff Kent – This Giants second baseman could hit the cover off of the ball. He leads all second baseman with career RBI with 1,518. His 377 homers are tops as well. He did win an MVP award, but he wasn’t a good fielder.
9. Billy Herman – He was known for playing with the Cubs and he ended his career with a .304 batting average. After a 100 RBI season, he lost two years due to military service! He had 12 seasons in the top 10 for most games played at the position and he had great range.
10. Red Schoendienst – This Cardinals lifer had 2,449 hits and a solid lifetime .289 batting average. His lifetime fielding percentage was .983.
