With the Chicago Bears hiring former Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach to become their offensive coordinator, there is a new wrinkle to the two teams’ bitter rivalry.
Well, the Chicago Bears certainly didn’t waste any time. After hiring general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus last week, the team went out and attacked their bitter rivals, the Green Bay Packers. With the ink barely dry on their own contracts, they went out and stole the Packers’ quarterbacks coach, Luke Getsy. They gave him a promotion as well, making him their offensive coordinator.
It was a bold move for the Bears to fire a shot at their rivals. Not only does this move help the team’s efforts at rebuilding their offense it also hurts the Packers. Green Bay has owned the NFC North for the last decade, winning eight division titles. Now, though, they might be in trouble. They have salary cap issues that could prevent them from keeping their All-World wide receiver, Davante Adams.
One look at the two teams’ rankings and you understand why the Bears are happy. This is how the two teams ranked offensively in 2021: The Packers ranked first in touchdown-to-interception ratio and fourth in passing touchdowns. The Bears ranked 29th in both those categories.

The Packers in salary cap hell and they suffer losses
The Packers are projected to be more than $50 million over the cap. Their future Hall of Fame quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, indicated that he isn’t interested in playing in a rebuild situation. That means trading him is a move they need to make.
Rodgers apparently wanted the Packers to promote Getsy themselves. They lost their own offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett. He departed to become the Denver Broncos head coach. Rodger felt that Getsy would be a natural replacement. Instead, the Packers had to turn to offensive line coach/run game coordinator, Adam Stenavich. I don’t think Rodgers has the same confidence in someone who ran the run game and the offensive line as much as a quarterbacks/passing game coach.
After their third consecutive 13-win season resulted in yet another playoff exit without a Super Bowl, the Packers face a daunting offseason. The Bears, on the other hand, despite having questions all over the roster, have hope that things will turn around. The Bears have over 30 free agents on the roster. However, they have available cap space to work through things. They are projected to have over $30 million in cap space. That’s before they make cuts to the roster as well.
Having Getsy benefits quarterback Justin Fields. The Bears want to develop their new franchise quarterback. Getsy was a quarterback when he played so he knows what needs to be done to succeed. Additionally, he coached one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the position. He knows what greatness looks like and will help Fields find it.
It’ll be interesting to see what moves these two rivals make this offseason. Once we see what they do, we’ll see a much more competitive rivalry between the two teams. Now, if the Minnesota Vikings gain their own momentu
