Tom Brady has officially retired from the NFL after 22 seasons as a quarterback, and the current all-time passing leader in yards and touchdowns did not have a losing record against any team in the NFL. However, he did struggle against one team in particular.
Despite having a losing record against Brady, the Miami Dolphins defeated Brady more than any other team in the league, defeating him 12 times (12-24) and disappointing Patriot faithful in multiple postseason scenarios across the years.
In 36 games against the Dolphins, Brady threw 717 completions on 1,170 attempts, good for a completion percentage of 61.3-percent. Brady also went for 8,596 yards, 72 touchdowns, but 27 interceptions. We also can’t forget the 66 sacks he’s taken in those 36 games as well. Brady’s career against the Dolphins averaged him 238.8 yards per game and a quarterback rating of 94.7.
But looking at the numbers further, Foxborough was the true safe haven for the signal-caller.
Brady Did Not Take His Talents to South Beach
When facing the Dolphins in Miami, Brady actually has a losing record of 8-10.
Even though he completed a step up from his career average and managed a percentage of 62.5-percent when playing in Miami, he only amassed 20 more scores than picks. He threw to the tune of 4,625 yards, 35 TDs and 15 INTs. Brady has also been sacked a whopping 38 times in his 18 games played in Miami.
When playing Miami at home, Brady is 16-2 despite a 59.9-percent completion percentage with just under 4,000 yards (3,971). Another key? Only 28 sacks.
The only game in which the Dolphins played Brady as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer resulted in a Miami loss, from a score of 45-17.
Even Brady’s Last Patriots Home Game Against Miami is One of the More Forgetable
The last time Miami faced Brady when he was in a Patriots uniform, the Dolphins came away with the victory by a score of 27-24, in Foxborough for the 2019 season finale. It was the first time Miami won in New England since 2008. This game also knocked the Patriots out of a first-round bye, and on a fast-track out of the postseason as they suffered a loss in the Wild Card round.
Brady’s first loss to the Dolphins came on Oct. 7, 2001, when Miami beat the Patriots by a score of 30-10 in their first ever game against the famed QB.
Brady Did Have Some Impressive Streaks, Though
In his 20 years as the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots, he was never swept by the Dolphins, however.
But, he and his Patriots swept the Dolphins in 2003, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and again in 2016. Brady and the Patriots pitched shutouts against Miami on Dec. 7, 2003, Dec. 30, 2012 and Sept. 15, 2019, meanwhile, the Dolphins’ only shutout against Tom Brady came Dec. 10th, 2006.
Puzzle Isn’t Quite Figured Out…And it Won’t Ever Be
Despite a seemingly lopsided history between the rivals, Brady said it’s the hardest place for him to play and he never quite figured out the formula.

“It has been a challenging environment, I think the climate plays some role and they always seem to play well when they play us down there,” Brady said in an interview with Jim Gray on Westwood One Radio in 2018. “We’ve done a bunch of different things over the years…We’ve gone down there on Friday, Thursday nights and practice is on a Friday, gone down there on Friday night after practice and stayed there Saturday. It’s just really about playing good when it comes down to it, and there’s no magic formula for that.”
He continued, “It’s just going to take us playing a great game of football. There’s a lot on the line for both teams. It’s a tough place to play obviously, but it’s a good challenge for us, too.”
Brady was dynamite in his career in December, especially in Foxborough. However, he had the most losses in his career to Miami in that span – especially on the road.
