NFL Combine: 5 Potential Packers Players to Watch
The NFL Combine is here! AKA the underwear Olympics, AKA the measuring stick NFL teams use to gauge prospects’ athletics mesurables for the upcoming draft. Teams already have their big boards built, but now it is time to get some hard data both on and off the field. From medical exams and interviews to testing numbers and drills, these young men are under the microscope. Money is to be made this week as players try to improve their draft stock. Here are some prospects the Green Bay Packers could have on their radar.
WR – Treylon Burks – Arkansas
All Treylon Burks did in 2021 was torch SEC defenses huge play after huge play. My top wide receiver in this draft, Burks looks to shine in Indianapolis. He is listed at an impressive 6′ 3″ and 225 lbs. but don’t be surprised if he weighs in even more. It is also rumored he has gigantic 11-inch hands. Though Burks constantly ran away from defenses on the field there are questions about his top-end speed. A good 40-yard dash time and three-cone drill could put those doubts to bed. This playmaker also blocks like a polished TE. Look for Burks to price himself out of Green Bays’ pick in the 1st round. He is a top 15 talent and future star.
WR – Wan’Dale Robinson – Kentucky
On the other end of the size spectrum is Wan’Dale Robinson. Don’t let his smaller frame fool you, this Junior from Kentucky has some dog in him. A movable weapon all over the field, some offensive coordinator will manufacture touches for him. I expect Robinson to try and weigh in around 190 lbs. at the combine. If he can hit that weight while keeping his elusive traits, Robinson is a lock for a day-2 playmaker.

EDGE – Boye Mafe – Minnesota
Boye Mafe has caught some buzz of late. The redshirt Senior comes with a lot of tools and game experience. A leader on the Minnesota defense, Mafe is stoutly built to play 3-4 outside linebacker in the pros. He isn’t ready to start but after he showed off a plethora of moves and counter moves at Senior Bowl week, he has put in the work. Stacking together a good combine could launch Mafe to an early day-2 pick.

LB – Nik Bonitto – Oklahoma
Nik Bonitto is an interesting prospect coming into the draft. Where do you play him? Listed at 6′ 2″ and 230 lbs. he is small for an edge player though he excels at getting after quarterbacks. Bonitto moved all over the Oklahoma defense and was never a conventional off-ball linebacker. Although I think he can handle that job. He was a pass rusher with enough athletic talent to spy quarterbacks in college. Bonitto might be a tweener but he’s a heck of a football player and spark plug to a defensive unit. The field drills will be key for him to show off his movement skills in space. He might not be every team’s cup of tea but someone will tap into this potential. It could be the Packers.
TE – Gerrit Prince – UAB
Today’s NFL is always looking for move tight ends who can stress a defense in the passing game. Enter Gerrit Prince who was a former WR turned TE. He will test well in the time skills but teams will want to see his route running and some in-line TE work. Prince played in the 230 lb. range and it will be interesting to see what he comes in at this week. A lot of Robert Tonyan is in Prince’s game. Prince, like many other smaller school kids, uses the combine to show they can hang with the power conference schools.

The Combine isn’t a make-it-or-break-it event for these kids and their NFL dreams. It is merely a tool to assess skills, potential, and personality. Gameplay will always be the best measure of football skill but good testing can get teams to project future success. These prospects work tirelessly for these drills and with 340 plus participants look for some big headlines next week coming out of the Combine.
