Jets Still Looking for WR1

Rich Cimini reports on Twitter the Jets are still searching for a number one wide receiver ahead of the 2022 season. The names to monitor are Tennessee’s AJ Brown, Seattle’s DK Metcalf, and San Francisco’s Deebo Samuel. 
Brown, while a cornerstone of the Titans offense, is coming up on a contract extension that will put the Titans in a worse spot than they already are cap-wise. 

The Seattle Seahawks announced they “fully intend” to extend DK Metcalf, but they’ve been receiving calls from multiple NFL teams. Considering how loaded the receiver class this year is, and the value of others, Metcalf could be moved for a far cheaper price than expected. Speculation is two second-round picks.

Jets sign defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, Jacob Martin

The Jets added two additional defensive lineman this past week. Solomon Thomas was a 1st round pick to the 49ers in 2017. After a brief stint with the Raiders, Thomas will be reunited with Robert Saleh. The Stanford product posted a 61.5 pass rush grade per PFF last season. Expect him as a rotational pass rusher.

The same can be said for Jacob Martin, the former Houston Texan. Martin was taken in the sixth round of the 2018 Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Last season, Martin earned a 69.9 pass rush grade, and a 67.3 overall grade. He recorded 32 QB hurries throughout last season.

The two are in similar positions. They aren’t here to replace the current Jets pass rushers or another defensive lineman. They’ll be rotational “third-down-only” types; fresh bodies to get after the quarterback in crucial situations.

Joe Douglas: “The way you remove a $30 million wide receiver is hitting the quarterback”

In a routine press conference, Joe Douglas quoted the previous. This pushes expectations away from defensive back with the fourth overall pick. While the Jets are reportedly high on Cincinatti’s Sauce Gardner, Douglas is shifting focus to a draft class ripe with pass rushers. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was at Oregon’s Pro Day, eyeing edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux who is inexplicably dropping in this year’s draft. 

The Jets have met, or are going to meet with other pass rushers, like Florida State’s Jermaine Johnson, and Georgia’s Travon Walker.

Douglas Emphasizes 2020 Draft Class Breakout

His first draft class with the New York Jets wasn’t great, but Douglas has expressed optimism that players who haven’t developed as expected from 2020 can emerge onto the scene this year. Mekhi Becton will be returning from a season-ending injury, with expectations of competition across the left and right tackle positions.

New York hasn’t shut the door on wideout Denzel Mims, either. Despite a sickening lack of production, and an inability to see the field, Douglas still expresses hope for the former third round pick.
