After trading away Tyreek Hill, the Kansas City Chiefs were expected to draft at least one wide receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft. They did just that with pick 54 overall in the second round last weekend. And now, Western Michigan’s Skyy Moore will look to provide a unique skillset in Kansas City.
No one will quite replace the ability of what Hill provided. Nonetheless, it is easy to imagine and see the role that the Chiefs could have planned for Skyy Moore. He provides a multi-faceted play style as a pass catcher. His savvy route running and toughness with the ball in his hands allows him to win from both the slot and the outside. Meanwhile, Kansas City will likely immediately infuse Moore into the offense by utilizing him in any way possible.
So much of the environment and scheme that the player is drafted into matters immensely for incoming rookies. Especially on offense, the difference between an immediate impact and an up and down start depends on many items. But for Skyy Moore, there is arguably no better team fit that he could have fallen into, than that of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Versatile Chess Piece
There is honestly no shortage of ways that the Chiefs could have to using Skyy Moore offensively. The same thing can be said when it comes to using him in all three levels of the field. Let’s start with the quick passing game. First off, Moore attacks defenses with an extremely deceptive style. He has a wide array of double moves and fakes at his disposal, as well as a detailed release package. Facing contact at the line of scrimmage or in space does not disrupt him too easily, as a result. That is quite impressive for a pass catcher who has only played wide receiver for three seasons over the course of his football career. As a run after catch threat after quick passes, Moore uses slipperiness and a compact density to make defenders miss.
In the intermediate to deep passing game, there is no route that Moore is uncomfortable with. He understands body positioning so well when needing to push vertically. Elsewhere, Moore is uber-quick when transitioning in and out of breaks. There is also a certain toughness and confidence that he has when running over the middle of the field. Add in the fact that he uncovers and separates so easily, and Andy Reid will have no hesitation to get Skyy Moore involved in a variety of ways.
Chiefs’ Offensive Game Plan
So, how do those abilities match up well with the Chiefs offensive game plan? Reid looks to attack defenses in a tactical way throughout the course of games and during the entire season. At the same time, the Chiefs are not going to hesitate in throwing a bunch of different looks, eye candy and motion at the opposing defense.

Skyy Moore can be used in all three of those facets. When it comes to being used in motion, his ability to cover ample amounts of ground quickly, while being able to reach top speed instantly helps him attack defenses after travelling laterally. We mentioned how he can win from both the slot and the outside alike already. But for Kansas City, Moore will help them have a somewhat seamless transition from the attack style that Hill brought. He simply understands how to alter and control his speed. Whether that comes with pushing hard vertically, or adjusting into the soft spots of zones, Moore has a great feel in space. Plus, his spatial awareness allows him to gain leverage early on during reps.
Overall, Moore’s comfortability with multiple route concepts will be key for his early production in Kansas City. The Chiefs have begun to use horizontal route patterns more often in recent years. Thus, Moore’s focus over the middle of the field and awareness in space will allow him to be a reliable target in tight spaces for Patrick Mahomes. On the other hand, he gets on top of defensive backs so rapidly. When it comes to working vertically, the Chiefs can utilize Skyy Moore both on the outside and up the seam.
Complementary Set Of Weapons
Adding size and physicality in the receiving corps has been a focal point for Kansas City this year. That is obviously evident when you look towards new additions like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Let’s not discount the same abilities of other names battling for roster spots like Josh Gordon, Daurice Fountain, Cornell Powell and even newly signed undrafted free agent Justyn Ross. Furthermore, it should be noted that Mecole Hardman does not fail in packing a punch either.
Skyy Moore may be viewed as a smaller wide receiver when you look at his raw numbers. Yet, he is thick for a player of his height. The length of his arms and size of his hands is rare for a wide receiver of his height as well. As a result, Moore will be able to add the similar size and physical components to that of the other new additions at the Kansas City wide receiver position. The Western Michigan product will be able to complement the other Chiefs pass catchers with his own blend of tenacity and explosive play ability.
