Chicago Bears: Alan Williams Raves About Kyle Gordon

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams is ecstatic about having second round pick, cornerback Kyle Gordon, calling him the complete package.

Despite perpetually having a need on offense, the Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles decided to go with defense with his two second round picks. Improving the defense is a little easier to do this offseason than it is for the offense.

With his first pick, the number 39 overall pick, Poles went with cornerback Kyle Gordon. Gordon now helps Jaylon Johnson.

Last season, after testing and finding problems against Johnson, opposing quarterbacks stopped targeting him so much. With the Bears having so much trouble with their other cornerbacks, why go after their best cornerback?

Now, hopefully, that all changes with Gordon. With him playing the ouside, it should also help settle the slot cornerback spot. There were a few players who were out of position because the second outside corner was lacking.

One person who is ecstatic over having Gordon is defensive coordinator Alan Williams. He takes over now and wants the Monsters of the Midway defense to return. Having Gordon gives him options now. Additionally, he feels Gordon has the tools to thrive in the NFL.

First of all, it’s his size. Thickness. He’s not a frail guy, he’s a thick guy… He has speed. He has the right temperament that we like. He is athletic. He runs. And then we look at the football IQ. He’s instinctive… Then you go to the stuff that he did on tape. Sticky in coverage. At the top of his route, he stays connected. And then he finished plays… There was a lot to like about the guy.

In addition to his coverage skills, Gordon also helps against the run. He enjoys tackling and being physical. The Bears’ run defense took a tumble last season so having more players involved in stopping the run will give the defense a big boost.

The Bears hope they found their answer at the other outside cornerback. They hope they can now concentrate on acquiring other pieces now that the outside cornerback spot is settled. With that done, they could actually set their sights on improving the offense.

If Gordon does live up to expectations, the Bears will then have a tough, athletic, and young duo for years to come. Johnson and Gordon could wreak havoc together. That is good since playing in the NFC North they’ll face Aaron Rodgers twice a year.
