While hindsight remains a potent NFL tool, predicting the future holds a bit more excitement. Which quarterback will lead the league in 2027?
In five years, the quarterback of the NFL quarterback landscape will change. Granted, this happens if Tom Brady actually retires for good. In addition, Aaron Rodgers will look for the proverbial exit and head off to the broadcast booth. With that said, the spots at the top of the passer list could hurt a few feelings and upset apple carts, etc. Yet, these talented passers should be at the top of the positional list in 2027.
1. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs)
In the present day, looking at Mahomes to this point, you can project some sense of future performance. Mahomes will take vertical chances, relying on accurate arm talent. However, in 2027, the 31-year-old Mahomes will continue to evolve his game. By then, Travis Kelce should be on his way to Canton. As a result, Mahomes will need to mentor and lead a new group of wideouts. Other upward-trending signs: stable completion percentage and yards per attempt. In addition, with or without Andy Reid. In 2027, the unquestioned best quarterback in the league.
2. Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills)
With a management and state government bringing a new stadium to the area, the Bills need a face of the franchise. Allen sits second on this list for a couple of reasons. The Pegula family desperately wants to win. Consequently, they will need to spend millions to stay competitive. Quarterback, outside of pass rusher is the most important NFL position. Plus, 2027 appears like the penultimate year of Allen’s deal. He’d want to stay in western New York. Meanwhile, on the field, Allen defies expectations. More importantly, regardless of the what his defense does, he shows up, as explained by his fourteen-to-one ratio of touchdowns to interceptions. At the same time, the onus rests with Allen. To justify this spot, at least one Super Bowl appearance is needed.

3. Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens)
Whether he sees this or not, the Ravens used 2022 to craft a better line in front of Jackson. For a quarterback that runs that much, some semblance of protection needs to occur. Meanwhile, in the backfield, by 2027, Jackson’s playoffs hiccups will have dissipated. Accordingly, the Ravens, already stacked on defense will require less superstar effort, but more of a grounded approach. The Ravens continue to build a championship defense. Blessed with his skill set, the only thing stopping Jackson..is Jackson.
4. Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers)
In 2027, no quarterback features the blend of size, accuracy, arm strength, and nimbleness like Herbert. Like Jackson, the Chargers realized that blocking supersedes anything else. They spent the last few drafts bolstering the offensive line. Here’s the catch: In 2027, Keenan Allen will be 35 years old. Never the most fleet=footed wideout, the Chargers will need to invest in an apprentice. At this point, Herbert will be able to take even a pedestrian receiver corps deep. Fifteen of Herbert’s thirty-two starts ended in a 300-yard passing day. Will that continue in the topsy-turvy NFL?
5. Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals)
Continuing a common theme, protecting Burrow, helps him make this list. On the field, Burrow’s accuracy, NFL arm, and cool demeanor drive the Bengals. After hitting the ground eighty-two times in his first two years, Burrow cannot keep taking such a volume of punishment. Moreover, the overly-thrifty Bengals franchise traditionally has not spent excessively. Granted, a return to the big game in 2022 could change that. Either way, wherever Burrow calls home, his unwavering focus will suit him well.
Overview
In all candor, all of these players could make the list, or fall flat. The NFL, especially for quarterback stays in the same crapshoot category as most positions in this sport. Teams change coaches more frequently. The players have no idea what new head coach or offensive coordinator sits right over the horizon. Truly not knowing from one day to the next does make prognostication into 2027 any easier.
