From 2016 to 2019, Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer owned the NL Cy Young Award. When the New York Mets signed “Mad Max” to a handsome contract the dream was to have these two aces in the everyday rotation. Well, we are into the middle of May, and so far, they haven’t pitched in the same rotation yet in the regular season. deGrom did have a spring game that Scherzer raved about.
Scherzer pulled himself out of a game that he won against the St. Louis Cardinals in his last start. Mets fans will hold their collective breath to see how long it will take for him to overcome what’s been diagnosed as an oblique injury. It could be 6-8 weeks. As one pitcher is back on the comeback trail the other ended up on the IL. That’s something I wondered when they signed the former Washington Nationals ace. That’s the worst-case scenario. The best case is, that he’s fine with some rest and stays healthy, and deGrom gets in the rotation in June or July, and they both get to pitch for the first-place Mets. A team that could run away with the division if they can figure this out. This will be the biggest storyline for this season.

Alexis Diaz Is a Rookie of the Year Candidate
Mets closer Edwin Diaz has a younger brother who at the age of 25 is throwing complete gas for the Cincinnati Reds. His name is Alexis, and he is cleaning up the Reds bullpen one game at a time as they try and get out of the NL Central cellar.
Both Diaz brothers made history recently by recording saves on the same day. That’s never happened before in the history of the league. The Reds selected Diaz in the 12th round of the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft. It’s taken a while for this guy to reach his peak.
In 17 games he has a win, two holds, and a save. He has a 1.02 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings. Let’s see if the Reds can catch fire, and he can add to his numbers. So far, he’s making waves in Cincinnati.
Bryce Harper is Back
Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper is back. He missed more than a few games this year getting an injection into his elbow that has prevented him from playing the field this year at Citizen’s Bank Park.
He’s been playing the designated hitter spot routinely since the injury, and I don’t think that’s going to change. It does weaken the Phillies’ defense but Harper’s hitting is the key here. If he misses too many games, the Phillies could drop more than the 7.5 games they are currently out of first place. Tied with the Atlanta Braves and trailing the NL East leading Mets. The next six weeks will tell the story while the Mets try and keep;p their starting pitching staff competitive. If they don’t gain much during that time, same for Atlanta, then the Mets could run away with the division. Only time will tell here.
