Bad Defense, Cold Bats Lead To Series Sweep At Hands Of The Yankees -

Prior to their trip to New York, the Detroit Tigers had won seven of their last nine games. Their pitching remained strong and the bats finally picked up key hits. Then they stepped onto the field at Yankee Stadium and that all seemed to go away.

In game one, Elvin Rodriguez got hit hard and afterward, it was revealed that he was tipping his pitches. You can watch a breakdown of the game and Rodriguez’s tipping below.

Combine tipping with pitches with facing Gerrit Cole who took a perfect game into the seventh inning and that is a recipe to lose. Those cold bats would continue in game two of the series.

Cold Bats In Yankees Series Spells Doom For Detroit

Game two in the series was more of the same offensively. After mustering just three hits in game one, the Tiger offense was even worse. Only Miguel Cabrera, who we talked about a few weeks ago as being one of the consistent offensive threats for the team, was able to get a hit. Beau Briske had the best game of his career but took the loss once again to move to 0-5 on the season.

Game three of the series is where most of the poor defense occurred, although Willi Castro’s misplay on a liner to center in game one also sticks out. For the first time all series, the Tigers were able to get things going offensively. After recording just four hits in the first two games, Detroit would double that total in game three including a three-hit outburst from Cabrera and two hits and two runs batted in from Javier Baez.

The defensive miscues began after the Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning. As Anthony Rizzo stole second, Jonathan Schoop would misplay the throw down to second by Eric Haase and allow Rizzo to advance to third on the error. In the next at-bat, Gleyber Torres would ground softly to Harold Castro who would try to cut down Rizzo at home plate. The throw from Castro would be high and get by Haase allowing Rizzo to score and Torres to reach second. Ultimately the Tigers would get walked off and get swept by the Yankees.

If the Tigers want to become a contending team this year they need to fix their bad defense and fight off the cold bats that have plagued this team so far.
