The AFC East, from a talent standpoint, could surprise in 2022. In fact, the amount of non-QB talent will downright shock people.

For two decades, the New England Patriots enjoyed a stranglehold over the AFC East. In fact, no team will ever enjoy that level of dominance. With all due respect to Tom Brady, other players did play a role in securing their legacy. Now, the complexion of the division changed. Granted, the quarterback may be the most important position on the field. However, the talent of the supporting cast definitely dictates how this division will play out.

Stefon Diggs

Whether you subscribe to Josh Allen’s rapid ascension on not, Diggs is the root cause. Despite not winning with brute force and power, Diggs continues to stack standout season. While he does appear like a high-volume target (330 targets), he cashes in on nearly seventy percent of those targets. Although 28, Diggs runs the route like a grizzled veteran. All of his routes look crisp, gaining separation at either at the top of his route or cut. Diggs wins with precision, facing cornerbacks that may not possess the same quick feet.

Liam Eichenberg

Now, before you click that X in the top right corner, entertain this thought. Tua Tagovailoa throws lefty passes. As a result, his blindside protector becomes singularly important. Miami invested draft capital and free-agent cash upgrading the offense. As a result, Tua needs time to find them. Eichenberg may not jump to your mind. At the same time, the Jets did not provide him with any semblance of quality offensive balance, Michael Carter paced the team with 147 carries. With this in mind, the Jets drafted Breece Hall. Hall, in concert with Carter, could give Wilson a legitimate run game that takes the heat off him. Hall, adept at the passing game as well, could figure into double-digit carries. If successful, teams would not tee off on Wilson, making him shoulder the load for the offense.

Hunter Henry

As of now, the Patriots do not employ an offensive coordinator. In spite of this, Bill Belichick remains steadfast in his personnel groupings. Under those circumstances, a player like Henry should see more targets. The former Charger did not drop a single pass last season. Combine that with a career-high nine touchdowns and Mac Jones will dismantle teams down the seams. AFC East linebackers and safeties will have a tough time. Henry’s ability to find daylight works versus every defense.

Overview

The AFC East feels freer. With talent up and down this division. The days of an undefeated division schedule feel rather remote. Instead, the talent lining up this fall will get a chance to write their own destiny and challenge the conference powers to represent the conference in the Super Bowl.
