While Deshaun Watson should be held responsible for his acts, the behavior of his enablers remains rather disturbing.
By now, unless you live under a rock, Deshaun Watson’s name should ring more than a few bells. The NFL quarterback that made more news off the field than on, stays in the headlines. Two dozen women accuse the Browns’ quarterback of gross misconduct. The details are rather off-putting. Yet, the most cringe-worthy aspect, outside of the allegations themselves, is the enabling. From NFL teams and executives to lawyers and segments of communities, Watson gained cover. We need to dole out where the fault lies. Granted, we all know that Watson deserves the lion’s share of the blame. However, those supporting/abetted him earned the following words.
The Houston Texans
In all honesty, ” throw away the entire franchise” for this. From Rick Smith on down, the general managers of this team must answer for the myriad of accusations leveled against them. First, they provided some of the places used for these incidents. Did no one ever bring this to the administration’s attention? Coupled with hearing anything buzzing about what occurred there, the Texans allowed some of this to happen. The Texans claimed they first heard of the alleged assaults in March 2021. NFL teams hire investigators to follow players. Plus, Watson admitted the Texans’ security staff provided non-disclosure agreements. Why does anyone need an NDA for a simple massage? Answer: It wasn’t a simple massage. Whatever fines and punishments for Houston will not be enough. Fire everyone in the offices.
The Cleveland Browns
Andrew Berry, the team’s general manager engineered a blockbuster trade. Moreover, Cleveland inked Watson to a five-year, 230-million dollar guaranteed deal. Watson will receive all of the money, barring injury. The Browns went all in for the player, thinking he could bring them to the NFL promised land. In forfeiting their principles, the Cleveland Browns shed their lovable underdog status. Instead, they devolved into a desperate team looking for any semblance of relevance. To their chagrin, their fanbase reacted. Bringing in a player with the ongoing allegations dissolved whatever goodwill. This franchise went winless in 2017. That was less of an embarrassment.

The Frat Boy/Clown
You know these folks. Wired on Red Bull, and buzzed on White Claw, calling their friends “broseph”. Hat backward and rocking khaki shorts, these folks use the ” women are like that” theory. The alleged victims ” are all looking for a payday”. If that were true, every woman would have sued Watson. Actually, some did not. They valued seeking justice and truth. Meanwhile, these folks only care about the football aspect. Caleb may want to ask his sister/aunt/cousin if these women sought a payday.

Our Community
As a Black man with comprehension of the past, the notion to be skeptical of accusations and the justice system is valid. However, those in the community blindly defending Watson are just wrong. This isn’t a case of a Black man being railroaded by a system engineered against him. He’s a millionaire with an elite attorney that somehow evaded judicial punishment. Deshaun Watson isn’t a down-on-his-luck brother that the system screwed. I love my community with all my heart. However, the ugly truth is that many Black people have a difficult time not idolizing and rooting for Black celebrities. Regardless of crime or violations, too many people that look like me line up and fight for famous people. From O.J. Simpson to R.Kelly to Bill Cosby, defending the indefensible should not be a trait of my race. Yet, here I am, watching the same lunacy play out..again.
Undetermined Future
No one knows how the Deshaun Watson situation ends. The NFL stays rather quiet on his probable punishment. In all honesty, anything short of a lengthy suspension will be viewed as yet another failure to maintain any order. At the same time, while Watson brought this upon himself, he was not alone in this process. Accomplices, whether knowingly or not exacerbated this situation.
