After Closed Door Meeting, Will Tigers Rally Or Fold? -

The closed-door meeting is a key feature of any sports team, but it’s usually only reported when a team is doing poorly. Doing poorly would be a nice way to describe the season the Detroit Tigers are having so far.

Ranking near the bottom of nearly every major offensive statistic certainly goes beyond doing poorly into just bad. For much of the season, the Tigers pitching staff, and more specifically the bullpen, has been doing their best to keep the team afloat. Recently, however, the load the staff has had to carry has begun to wear them down.

Something has to change for the Tigers, and after this closed-door meeting, they have two choices: rally or fold.

How Do You Fix The Worst Offense In Baseball?

The Tigers are without a doubt the worst team offensively in Major League Baseball right now. They rank in the bottom five of nearly every offensive statistic including dead last in runs scored and home runs. Of the five players who have enough plate appearances to qualify, only Miguel Cabrera has a batting average above .200. When multiple members of your everyday starting lineup are hitting under .200 you don’t stand a chance in most games.

The frustrating part for the team and the fans is that these players aren’t sub-.200 players for their career. Jeimer Candelario holds the lowest career batting average of the sub-.200 players at .240. Teams will struggle for wins if they have one regular player that is mired in a season-long hitting slump. To have five of those players in your lineup most days is extreme and has been the cause of the Tigers’ poor record.

When we first looked at the Tigers’ struggles, it was still just early May, which is usually when an early-season slump starts to turn around for most players. Unfortunately, the players who were struggling then still haven’t turned things around. The bigger problem is that there is no real solution for AJ Hinch.

They cannot risk designating these players for assignment, they would be picked up and if they got right offensively, it would be another black eye for the tenure of Al Avila.

Will The Closed Door Meeting Changes Things For Detroit?

Last night was the epitome of the Tigers’ season as a whole.

Beau Briske pitched the best game of his young career and Michael Fulmer shut down the Texas Rangers in the eighth inning. However, the Tigers only scored one run despite eight hits and Gregory Soto blew his second save of the season and took the loss.

The Tigers’ dependence on their pitchers being perfect is coming back to bite them. Even in games where they do pitch well, one run isn’t enough to win most games. It will take more time to see if the closed-door meeting will help fix the offense. If it doesn’t changes have to be made; ideally from the top down.
