Chicago Bears: Brisker Opening Eyes In Camp This Offseason

Rookie safety Jaquan Brisker has been impressing coaches and teammates alike with his tough, hard play this offseason so far.

Well, this week’s minicamp is over for the Chicago Bears. Now they have a break until the real fun begins — training camp. Once that starts, they also have preseason games, meaning the regular season is almost upon us.

Once training camp begins we get to really see the new-look Chicago Bears. We see the position battles progress and get to see which bubble players are doing their best to make the roster. Additionally, we get to see how key players like Justin Fields look.

From the news coming out of the camps and OTAs so far, however, we see that one move that general manager Ryan Poles made this offseason could pay off quickly.

Poles selected safety Jaquan Brisker with the 48th pick of this year’s draft. The move was puzzling to some. The Bears had two second-round picks and many people expected Poles to either trade down for more picks or go with offensive players to bolster a struggling offense.

Poles did neither and he ended up selecting cornerback Kyler Gordon and Brisker.

Both selections look good so far, as Gordon and Brisker have impressed. Brisker, however, has opened a lot of eyes. He’s been better than advertised thus far.

Since rookie camp began, and through OTAs and minicamp this week, all Brisker has done is make big plays. He’s impressing both his teammates and his coaches.

Brisker is one of the first ones in Halas Hall and among the last ones to leave. He soaks everything up like a sponge. When former Bears great Charles Tillman came to camp to give pointers on his patented “Peanut Punch” to the defense, Brisker took it to heart. Now he’s all over the field, impressively punching the ball out as Tillman did in his playing days.

Head coach Matt Eberflus is very impressed with Brisker.

He’s been really good, really good. In fact, I was just talking to (defensive coordinator) Alan Williams about him on the field and we’re just so thrilled with his talent, you know, with his mental makeup and just the person he is and where he is in his development so far up until this point.

Brisker’s success helps Jackson

Having Brisker succeed really helps the defense. One of the problems was the play of free safety Eddie Jackson. He was an All-World when he started out in the league. However, the last two years were a struggle for him. He had to do more and that kept him from being the turnover machine he was earlier.

Jackson has taken to helping Brisker succeed. He knows that if Brisker succeeds it makes his own life easier. Instead of having to do too much, he can just concentrate on the quarterback and making plays on the ball again.

What also helps is that both Jackson and Brisker can play either safety spot. That allows the coaches to move them around the field. It gives the coaches flexibility and keeps opposing coaches guessing.

The Brisker-Jackson combination could end up being a very good one for the Chicago Bears. If they succeed, the Monsters of the Midway defense could return sooner rather than later.
