Welcome to the Wednesday edition of Full Press Hockey’s NHL Rumors! The Stanley Cup Final is here and two powerful teams are competing for Lord Stanley’s Cup. Other clubs are always working to improve their rosters for next season. In this edition of NHL Rumors, we will take a look at the Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Carolina Hurricanes.
Vancouver Canucks – P.K. Subban
Rumor: – Per – Rob Simpson – vancouverhockeynow.com. P.K. Subban is an unrestricted free agent who just turned 33 years old. Could the Vancouver Canucks be interested in signing him?
We know that the New Jersey Devils aren’t interested in re-signing him due to his declining play-level. According to dobberhockey.com, he could demand a salary of about $2.36 million on the free agent market. There’s probably reasons why the Canucks may not be into signing him. His age is certainly a concern since the Canucks are attempting to keep their roster relatively young. Yet, they have two defensemen near Subban’s age in Tyler Myers and Luke Schenn who are both 32.
He would be a good right-side blueliner to help the Canucks going forward. He tallied five goals, 17 assists in 77 games this season. He’s not terrible and still has size at 6′-0″, 210 pounds. He also had 69 hits and 90 blocks to his credit. It seems he will find a home where a team has a need for an experienced defenseman on a one-year contract at a reasonable price. It just may not be in Vancouver.

Philadelphia Flyers – James van Riemsdyk
Rumor: Per – Michael Del Rosa – nhltraderumors.me. Elliotte Friedman believes the Flyers could shop winger James van Riemsdyk to free up salary-cap space. The Flyers only have $5.18 million in cap space which limits their abilities to make moves.
Friedman on TJMS talking potential Flyers moves: "I wonder about (James) van Riemsdyk, I can see them trying to move him to create cap space, I think that's going on."
— NHL Watcher (@NHL_Watcher) June 17, 2022
The Flyers winger has a year left on his contract with an annual average value of $7 million but an actual salary of $5 million. The 6’-3”, 217-pound winger also lacks no-trade protection, giving the Flyers a wide range of potential trade partners. While van Reimsdyk’s play has declined, he still managed 24 goals with 38 points while playing in all 82 games this season. In his 13 seasons in the NHL, he has reached the 20-goal mark seven times.
In order to implement a trade, the Flyers may need to retain salary or add a draft pick or prospect to make it happen. A contending team may like to add him to their roster. He can still light the red lamp, and his size is always a good asset to possess, especially at playoff time.
Carolina Hurricanes – Ethan Bear
Rumor: Per – Elliotte Friedman – sportsnet.ca. Ethan Bear now has permission from the club to talk to other teams, even though the Canes still want to sign him.
CAR has given RFA Ethan Bear permission to talk to other teams. From what I hear, Hurricanes still wish to sign Bear, but two sides are not close on an agreement. Remember, nothing can happen before July 13 without Carolina approval.
— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) June 21, 2022
Bear seemed to struggle this season with the Hurricanes and definitely fell out of favor with head coach Rod Brind’Amour. He was a healthy scratch during the Canes’ playoff run. The soon to be 25-year-old is completing a two-year, $4 million contract and has arbitration rights.
Much of the fact that the Canes may want to move on from Bear is how well Anthony DeAngelo has played. Tony ‘D’ had 10 goals, 42 assists in 64 games while adding another 10 points in 14 playoff games.
According to dobberhockey.com, DeAngelo could demand about $5.43 million for a new contract. With the team having about $19.4 million in cap space with four restricted free agents, and six unrestricted free agents to consider, that leaves little for the underperforming Bear.
Bear is still young, and his contract estimate of $884,900 is attractive. It seems he will get some consideration from an NHL team who is in need of a right-hand shooting D-man.
That wraps up another edition of NHL rumors. Be sure to catch our next article on Sunday!
