Detroit Red Wings Acquire Ville Husso
The NHL goalie market just got smaller as the Detroit Red Wings acquired restricted free agent Ville Husso in a trade with the St. Louis Blues. The Red Wings gave up a third-round 2022 pick for the rights to Husso.

The Red Wings then signed the 27-year-old netminder to a three-year $4.75 million AAV deal. Husso had a great 2021-22 season. His 25-7-6 record with a .919 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against-average was impressive. In the competitive goalie free agency market, the Detroit club accomplished their goalie needs.

NHL Goalie Free Agent Market
With Husso off the market, that leaves just two goalies left. Both Jack Campbell and Darcy Kuemper are still out there. It was reported that the Colorado Avalanche are willing to accept a late round draft pick for Kuemper. The Av’s traded for Alexandar Georgiev, making Kuemper expendable.
Campbell may stay in Toronto now that they created some cap space by trading backup goalie Petr Mrazek to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Husso’s Future
For Husso, he got his wish come true to be a starting NHL goalie. Playing behind Jordan Binnington was not ideal for his career objectives. He certainly gives the Red Wings a good option in net.
The Blues are putting their confidence in Binnington who got his starting role taken away by Husso. Binnington’s $6 million contract is still in place through the 2026-27 season. If he fails to perform, the Blues may decide to try and move him.
