As with every NFL team, training camp is important for Green Bay. Here are 4 Things to Watch at Packers Training Camp.
With July coming to an end that only means one thing…NFL football is back! In less than a week, training camps will be kicking off around the country. The Green Bay Packers will return to work as a team to prepare for the upcoming season. Here are some things to look for at Packers Training Camp in 2022.
1. What’s the plan with the Offensive Line?
When everyone is healthy, the Packers are in a good spot. 4 of the 5 offensive line positions are filled with proven talent. LT David Bakhtiari, LG Jon Runyan, C Josh Myers, and future RT Elgton Jenkins creates a strong unit. That leaves a battle at RG to watch for. There is also the possibility that Jenkins might not be ready to go because of injury.
Fortunately for Green Bay, the team has options. Royce Newman had his ups and downs as a rookie, but will try to fend off draft picks Sean Rhyan and Zach Tom. Meanwhile, Yosh Nijman could open camp at right tackle and transition to being a true swing tackle when Jenkins returns. The coaching staff also thinks Rhyan can hold it down at RT. My opening day prediction is Rhyan wins RG while Nijman gets the nod at RT. These young guys are going to get a shot to prove themselves. But that battle begins in training camp.
2. Who will emerge at Wide Receiver?
No individual WR will replace the loss of the pass-catchers that have left the Packers. With Davante Adams gone to the desert and Marquez Valdes-Scantling also moving to the AFC West, Green Bay will have a ton of production to make up for. Along with Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard, the Green and Gold will be asking a group of newcomers to produce right away. Seasoned veteran Sammy Watkins is a great fit for the Matt LaFleur system. Watkins’ career never went the way many thought it would but not for lack of talent. It was simply that he always struggled with staying on the field. Now all reports say Watkins is motivated, conditioned, and ready to resurrect his career.
Green Bay then went with a youth movement adding three rookies in the draft. Christian Watson might be the most physically gifted wide receiver Aaron Rodgers has ever worked with. Romeo Doubs is a big play waiting to happen and may be more pro-ready than Watson out the gate. Add to the mix, late-round flyer Samori Toure who averaged 19.5 yards per catch in college to his resume. This group is raw but it will be exciting to watch grow on the fly in training camp. The WR room as a whole will need to make up for losing some star talent.

3. How quickly do the 1st-round Georgia additions become mainstays on the field?
During the 1st round of the 2022 draft, the Packers went out and took linebacker Quay Walker. Just a few picks later they added his college teammate defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt. Other than being Bulldogs they are both elite athletes. In camp, expect Green Bay to get these guys reps early and often. Wyatt was one of the top defensive tackles in college last season. Can he show off those skills early at the next level?
Walker already leapfrogged Krys Barnes to play alongside De’Vondre Campbell. There have been some rumors of moving Walker around the defense in different packages and letting him play either off-ball or blitzing. With the addition of these two players, it will be intriguing how second-year defensive coordinator Joe Barry tweaks his defense to their skill set.
4. Any kind of life on Special Teams!
Brutal! That would be the most accurate descriptor for the Packers special teams unit play over the last few years, and even that might be putting it nicely. Enter Rich Bisaccia and his 38 years of experience as a coach with 20 seasons as a special teams coordinator. Green Bay also devoted more time and assets to the unit. It will start with kick and punt return duties. Can Amari Rodgers bounce back from a very bad rookie year or will a rookie get a shot at that job? I don’t see a lot of starters playing special teams but it’s an all-hands on deck to break this curse.
