The New York Mets have some needs. A better third baseman? Maybe. An outfielder, for sure. Another late-inning bullpen arm, yes. And the designated hitter spot along with catcher has been weak at best. With a paltry two-game lead in the division and a basket full of money, the Mets will be in on a lot of the best free agents in the game. Whether or not they pull the trigger is another story.
Daniel Vogelbach is a Fill In
The team from Flushing further weakened their bullpen when they traded young reliever, Colin Holderman who was doing very well to the Pirates for Daniel Vogelbach. Vogelbach was struggling but he’s been on the radar of Mets GM Billy Eppler, so they grabbed him as a DH who can face righties. He contributed to his first game, but many do. If he doesn’t hit a bunch of home runs, then this is just a temporary fix. Baltimore’s Trey Mancini is still a potential target because of his power and corner outfield play.
Who’s Selling In The National League
There is no doubt that the Washington Nationals are the biggest seller. They have offered up their superstar, Juan Soto, while he still has some term. The Mets are unwilling to give up certain prospects, so it seems like the Cardinals and Dodgers are the front runners. Josh Bell is another who is being offered up. He can play first base and DH. The Mets may still have an interest as well as the Brewers.

The Pirates Have Sold One and Will Sell More
Bryan Reynolds is a name that’s been out there. The Yankees may have interest in the 27-year-old centerfielder who just returned from injury. He has three years left as far as the club holding his rights, but they seem to be in sell-off mode so I wonder if the Pirates acting like he’s an important part of the team is a good sales job. It sure seems that way to me.
The Cubs Are Back To Basement Dweller Status
The Cubs might not be in last place, but that’s only because the Cincinnati Reds bailed out on this season before it began. The Cubs seemed destined to move catcher, Wilson Contreras. The Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox are two teams that could use a good catcher who can hit. Ian Happ is another player who could be going. Odds are getting higher as we approach the August 2nd deadline. Happ is being linked to the Padres because of his versatility and some pop in his bat.
The Reds May Have The Jewel of the Deadline
Every team can use Luis Castillo. So many articles are being written about the hard-throwing righty who can use a change of scenery. He’s a two-time All-Star who has a 2.77 ERA on a brutal team. One team that should look at him is the Philadelphia Phillies. Dave Dombrowski is known for trading the farm away, and he needs a starter to do anything in a potential playoff run when Jean Segura and Bryce Harper return from injury. My best guess is he will end up on an American League team.
