Mac Jones Debuts At 85 On NFL’s Top 100

Entering his second season in the league, New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has made his first appearance on the NFL’s annual Top 100 list.

Jones, who led the Patriots back to the playoffs in 2021, was voted as the 85th best player by the players entering 2022.

The ranking will likely draw quite a reaction considering the discourse surrounding Jones ranges from the “second coming of Tom Brady” to “he has already peaked after one season”.

Now, the reality is, that the 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft had a solid season for the rebuilding Patriots. Jones started all 17 games for New England, completing 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions as the Patriots went 10-7 and were in contention for the AFC East late in the year.

His critics, many of which reside in Western New York and Southern Florida, will cite his minimal pass attempts in windy Buffalo as evidence that he is nothing more than a game manager. But, if you consider his entire body of work as opposed to a small sample size in a unique situation, Jones showed a lot of promise in his rookie season with plenty of room to grow as he enters year two with more confidence and far greater expectations.

In addition to a second season with tight ends, Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, the Patriots have given Jones more depth at wide receiver adding former Dolphin DeVante Parker to a group that includes Jakobi Meyers, Nelson Agholor, and Kendrick Bourne. In addition, 2022 draft pick, Tyquan Thornton has shown a lot of promise early on in camp and in the team’s lone preseason game to date.

Jones’ play in 2021 was enough to earn the recognition of his peers. Can he maintain his spot in 2022?
