Are Boston Red Sox Accepting Rebuild Mode?

The Boston Red Sox are enduring a rebuild period once again after reaching the heights of the 2018 World Series. However, since their triumph, there has been an exodus of key talent that drove them to the crown. Alex Cora’s men lost Mookie Betts in the 2020 campaign to the Los Angeles Dodgers and were forced to watch as he played an integral part in their success. Andrew Benintendi was next to depart from the outfield in a trade deal to the Kansas City Royals and has since moved to the New York Yankees.

The departures have kept coming in 2022 as Christian Vazquez was allowed to leave for the Houston Astros, and there are no signs yet that general manager Chaim Bloom is finished with his rebuild of the entire roster. The Red Sox have not managed to get value for money on their high-priced deals in the past, and it seems to be a primary motivation for Bloom to ensure those days are over.

David Price arrived with much fanfare after his brilliance with the Detroit Tigers, and although he did have his moments in the run to the World Series, Boston never saw the best of him and he certainly did not live up to his contract. Chris Sale has fallen under the same umbrella, even though his problems have been due to injury rather than underwhelming performances.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020, Sale has been barely seen by the Red Sox. It has left them short of options among their starting rotation, leaving Nathan Eovaldi fighting a battle, and is the lone survivor from the starting group in 2018. Even Eovaldi’s future seems far from certain, with Bloom prioritizing the farm system over high-price deals for pitchers.

What does the future hold?

The Red Sox have fallen out of contention in the 2022 campaign after a poor run over July, which has all but removed them from the World Series conversation, certainly in the minds of the betting sites. There’s plenty of money in the MLB, and the Red Sox’s stringent policy could come back to haunt them over the next decade. Moves such as their one for Trevor Storey in the last off-season will not appease one of the most passionate fanbases in the league.
