AFC West Odds: Can The Chiefs Remain Atop The Division?

Despite the many additions to every other team in the division, the Kansas City Chiefs still have the best odds to win the AFC West.

August is winding down which means the kickoff to the 2022 NFL season is upon us.

During the offseason, the AFC West was constantly in the headlines. From the departure of Tyreek Hill to the arrival of Davante Adams and Russell Wilson, the AFC West is quite literally the most interesting division heading into the regular season.

Now, as much as things are different, they remain the same as the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are favored to win the AFC West for the seventh consecutive season despite the many additions and improvements to every other team in the division.

Late during the 2021 season, the Chargers were in the driver’s seat to win the AFC West had it not been for some very questionable coaching decisions in their games against Kansas City and late in the year. Ultimately, they missed the postseason entirely, despite an elite season from second-year quarterback, Justin Herbert.

During the offseason, the Chargers upgraded their defense with the additions of J.C. Jackson and Khalil Mack to a unit that already features Joey Bosa and Derwin James. Will it be enough to slow down the high-powered offenses in the division?

Speaking of additions… new Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is the only other signal caller to have a Super Bowl under his belt aside from Mahomes. And, much like Mahomes, Wilson led the Seahawks to back-to-back Super Bowls, winning the first and losing the second. Coincidently, both losses by each quarterback came by a team led by Tom Brady (Patriots – 2014, Buccaneers – 2020). However, that last Super Bowl appearance came eight seasons ago with Seattle. Will a change of scenery help propel Wilson back to the Super Bowl?

In Las Vegas, the Raiders added former Packers wide receiver Davante Adams and hired Super Bowl winning assistant, Josh McDaniels to be their new head coach in hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 20 years.
