For the second consecutive year, the National Football League will embark on an 18-week season in which every club will play 17 regular-season contests. And each conference will once again send seven team to the playoffs.
A total of 20 NFL franchises have won at least one title during Super Bowl Era. So here’s a look at how the 12 other clubs currently rank in terms of capturing Super Bowl LVII in Arizona on February 12, 2023.
12. Houston Texans
There’s been another head coaching change in Houston as the team promoted defensive coordinator Lovie Smith to the top spot. Quarterback Deshaun Watson was traded to Cleveland and the Texans are looking for promising Davis Mills to take another step forward. Meanwhile, keep an eye on rookie running back Dameon Pierce.
11. Carolina Panthers
It’s a team that won exactly five games three consecutive years. And this past season proved to be especially disappointing considering Matt Rhule’s club opened 3-0. The Panthers are making another change at quarterback and swung a deal for Baker Mayfield. Can the defense do a better job of forcing turnovers (16 takeaways in 2021)?
10. Jacksonville Jaguars
This once-formidable franchise is a combined 67-158 the past 14 seasons and reached the playoffs just once (2017) the past 14 seasons. Last year’s experiment with Urban Meyer proved to be nothing short of a disaster. Speaking of 2017, that was the year Doug Pederson – the Jaguars’ new head coach – led the Eagles to a Super Bowl win.
9. Atlanta Falcons
Quarterback Matt Ryan was dealt to the Indianapolis Colts this offseason. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley is serving a season-long suspension (gambling). The new starting signal-caller is Marcus Mariota, with rookie Desmond Ridder waiting in the wings. Have the Falcons found a pass rush? They totaled an NFL-low 18 sacks in 17 games a year ago.

by Full Press Coverage on November 27, 2023 at 12:12 am
8. Detroit Lions
The club has finished last in the NFC North basement each of the past four seasons. And the Lions won just three games a year ago under their newest head coach. But Dan Campbell has something going on in the Motor City and his players are responding. The defense has been nightmarish for far too long but watch end Aidan Hutchinson.
7. Arizona Cardinals
The team comes off its first postseason appearance since 2015. But under head coach Kliff Kingsbury and with quarterback Kyler Murray, the Cardinals have had a bad habit of starting strong but fading in the second half. There’s no DeAndre Hopkins for the team’s first six games. And who rushes the passer with Chandler Jones gone?
6. Cleveland Browns
The organization swung a major deal to obtain three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. But he’ll serve an 11-game suspension to start the season. Will he finally take the field in Week 13? In any case, this is a town to team on both sides of the football. But surviving the AFC North is a tall task.
5. Tennessee Titans
After going more than a decade without winning a division title, the Titans have now captured the AFC South in consecutive years. Derrick Henry missed more than half of the regular season in 2021 but remains dangerous. Ryan Tannehill was mistake-prone this past season and struggled in the postseason. Don’t underestimate Mike Vrabel.
4. Minnesota Vikings
There’s a new head coach in the Twin Cities in former Rams’ assistant Kevin O’Connell. But there’s also a new defensive coordinator when it comes to the Purple Gang in Ed Donatell – who is more than familiar with the NFC North. The Vikings are loaded on the offense but stopping the opposition has been a problem two straight years.
3. Cincinnati Bengals
Quarterback Joe Burrow was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year and the Bengals played their best football late in the year and wound up in Super Bowl LVI. The offensive line was a season-long issue but the team addressed that unit in a big way in free agency. Cincinnati’s defensive front should be more than a handful once again.
2. Los Angeles Chargers
This is a team that has teased many the last few years but hasn’t reached the postseason since 2018. And a season ago, the Chargers allowed (459) nearly as many points as they scored (474). Brandon Staley’s team added Khalil Mack, J.C. Jackson and Kyle Van Noy on defense. Can they win a division title for the first time since 2009?
1. Buffalo Bills
It’s a team that has reached the playoff four of the past five seasons. But that didn’t stop general manager Brandon Beane from revamping this club when it came to both the offensive and defensive lines. Quarterback Josh Allen still needs to be a bit more careful with the football. But the Bills are loaded just about everywhere.
