The New York Mets have 21 games left this season to not blow the NL East Division lead. The Mets and Braves have been slugging it out now for months, and the Braves made up significant ground. Will the Mets be division champs, or will they be a top wild-card team? There’s a big difference.

The Mets Starting Rotation Sets Them Apart

If the Mets win the division and get a first-round bye they can set their starting rotation. That’s the most important thing right now with ace, Jacob deGrom looking healthy, and Max Scherzer having some aches and pains. Throw it all out the window if one of these two misses the playoffs. That’s their chance of winning. If either hurler goes out for a while, their chances decrease dramatically.

The Braves Are Still Hot

The Braves had a 14-game winning streak this season. The third longest since 1935 for any World Series Champion. The Braves are 63-24 since June 1st. Pitching prospect, Spencer Strider and Michael Harris II, another hot rookie. One of them could win the NL Rookie of the Year Award because the team has been better with them. That’s how it works in good organizations.

That last Wild Card Spot Is Undecided

The Milwaukee Brewers are still in the race. The Phillies have moved up in the race, without Zack Wheeler and the Padres are dropping, which they seem to do every season no matter the moves they make. The Brewers have won two in a row and they’re still in it, really in it. It’s been a roller-coaster for their fans. Even analytics enthusiasts are surprised they’re scoring more than their expected runs scored. They are on pace for ten more wins so they could be in it until the very end.

2023 Rule Changes Are Interesting

The new pitch clocks will make games finish around the 2:30 mark. If that happens that will help the sport. The new shift rules will help bring some sanity back to the game. Some shifts are fine but it was getting out of control. The bigger bases are an issue for me. While it may cut down on injuries to runners and pitchers and first basemen who cover the bag, players will be able to cut the corner on that base, stay in the lines, and get to first faster. Ground balls in the hole are already a crap shoot these days with players being faster than ever. This could really change things.
