Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy talks about passing all the time but so far in 2022 we haven’t seen much of it. That must change if the team wants to prove all the doubters wrong.
Well, we are two games in and it seems as if the wheels are already falling off of the Chicago Bears season. After starting out slowly against the San Francisco 49ers early on in their Week 1 matchup, they got it together to pull off an incredible upset.
However, they had to travel to Lambeau Field to face the hated Green Bay Packers. Despite having high hopes, the Packers again came away with a dominating blowout victory.
Something happened in that loss to the Packers. Some of the fans are already starting to turn on quarterback Justin Fields and the entire Bears team.
Fields was asked about who this loss hurt more, the fans or the players. He gave what many thought was a straight answer — the players feel it more because the fans didn’t “put in any work.”
What he said was true. We do not see any fans running routes or helping head coach Matt Eberflus draw up plays. Yes, the fans are a big part of the team, but the game is won by the players, not them.
Apparently, it wasn’t the blowout loss that was the most terrible part of the game. It was Fields supposedly insulting the fans. How dare he say the truth?

Getsy should take most of the blame
The Fields press conference overshadowed what the real story of the game was — it appeared there was no real passing attack. Fields dropped back to pass only 14 times. Three of them resulted in sacks. That means he threw only 11 passes — against the freaking Green Bay Packers!
The Bears ran almost double the times they passed, 27 times. David Montgomery had himself a game, rushing for 122 yards, averaging 8.1 yards per rush. He by himself had more touches (15) than Fields had throws.
The person most responsible for this is offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. He is the mastermind of this offense. Remember, Eberflus is more of a defensive-minded coach so he lets Getsy do his thing. Of course, he oversees everything so he bears some responsibility but this is Getsy’s offense.

Ep 161: Lions Dissapoint; NFL MVP; Week 12 Discussion
by Full Press Coverage on November 27, 2023 at 12:12 am
Under former head coach Matt Nagy, we saw the Bears struggle on offense. Last season, the Bears ranked 23rd in passing attempts and 30th in passing yards. The thinking was with Getsy at the helm those numbers would go up.
Instead, the Bears are worse so far in 2022. They rank dead last in both passing attempts and passing yards. Fields only has 28 attempts and 191 yards. Those are numbers that many quarterbacks around the NFL could surpass in just one game.
Entering the Packers game, Getsy talked about trying to get the running game involved. He talked about wanting to pass on every play and how it was difficult to use run plays.
I’m a quarterback by heart, so I want to throw the ball every play. That part of it is hard for me every time … it’s an important part about our play style and how we’re going to go win football games.
Ok, so there is a bit to talk about with that statement. First, this statement should send shivers down Chicago Bears fans. This is the return of Nagy. Throughout his tenure in Chicago, he had trouble involving the running game in the offense. There were times he just forgot about Montgomery and company and just went pass crazy. The fact that Getsy has the same feeling should be scary.
Second, as mentioned, he said that before the Packers game. He then went out and had Fields drop back just 14 times. He is the offensive coordinator and has to find ways to get Fields to throw more than 11 passes. There is no way they’ll get any wins the rest of the season by doing that unless they have torrential rainfalls in every game.
Give the kid a chance to succeed or fail
Getsy and Eberflus have to let Fields go and have him show what he has. With how the season is going already, there are many who feel the Bears brass, including general manager Ryan Poles, are not sold on the young quarterback. If that is the case, take off the handcuffs and let him do his thing. Let him either prove them right or prove them wrong.
Eberflus and the coaching staff had to have been told that wins and losses are not a priority this season. The Bears simply don’t have the roster to be competitive. They will battle every game, as we already see, but more times than not the result will still be a loss.
On the other hand, the development of the young players is the priority. We already see that they have some impressive young players on the roster. Braxton Jones is settling in at left tackle, Jaquan Brisker looks like a veteran, and Dominique Robinson looks like he could be a steal. Fields has to be in that group.
As we mention ad nauseam, the Chicago Bears have the highest salary cap in the league next offseason. That means that this roster will look dramatically different and likely much better than this group. It is imperative that the Bears mix in the young players with new veterans.
Having a good, young quarterback at the helm makes Chicago a more attractive place to come. That means that Getsy has to help Fields’ development. He has to do whatever he can so that Fields has a great grasp of this offense so he can run it with ease when better payers arrive.
Throwing 11 passes and averaging less than 100 yards per game won’t do that. Let him pass or fail by playing all out, not by handcuffing him.
