NFL 2022: Five Key Statistics for Week 3 -

The 2022 NFL season has already had its share of surprises. And that should be no shock considering the unpredictability of this league. And as usual, there are some interesting numbers to ponder as the National Football begins its third week of play.

There have now been 56 Super Sundays and 53 times, at least one team that began the season 2-0 was playing for the Lombardi Trophy. This year, the Bills, Dolphins and Chiefs are the AFC’s 2-0 teams. In the NFC, it’s the Eagles, Giants and Buccaneers. The three exceptions to the statistic? Super Bowl XXII: Denver (1-0-1) vs. Washington (1-1), Super Bowl XLIX: New England (1-1) vs. Seattle (1-1) and Super Bowl LII: Philadelphia (1-1) vs. New England (1-1).

Still thinking that your favorite team will be playing on Super Bowl Sunday this upcoming February? There are five teams off to 0-2 starts. That would be the Bengals, Raiders and Titans (all playoff teams from 2021), along with the Falcons and Panthers. Four times in the previous 56 years, a team dropped its first two games of the season and reached the Super Bowl. Three of those clubs (’93 Cowboys, ’01 Patriots and ’07 Giants) would win a Super Bowl.

Ponder the Jacksonville Jaguars. After two weeks, they are not only the only team in their division to win a game, Doug Pederson’s club comes off a shutout win of the rival Colts. A season ago, this club was dismal in many areas. One disappointing statistic was the fact that the team played in 17 games and forced an NFL-low nine turnovers. But in this season’s split with the Commanders and Colts, Pederson’s club has already come up with six takeaways.

The Las Vegas Raiders have dropped their first two games. Josh McDaniels’ club has had issues on both sides of the ball. The team has as many turnovers (4) as offensive touchdowns scored. But the real disappointment has been a defense that added pass-rusher Chandler Jones and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. But after two outings, the Raiders have totaled one sack (Maxx Crosby) and one takeaway (INT by Amik Robertson) in eight-plus quarters of play.

Todd Bowles’ club is off to a 2-0 start and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have allowed an NFL-low 13 points in besting the Cowboys and Saints the first two weeks. And both victories have come on the road. The Bucs have already come up with 10 sacks and forced six turnovers. Bowles’ squad has surrendered only one touchdown in two games and it came in the fourth quarter at New Orleans. Can the visiting Packers get off to a good start Sunday at Tampa?
