Forget Your Feelings Friday: NFL Week Three -

With key matchups, Week Three will start to fill in the small details of the overall NFL season landscape.

Dig, if you will a picture, of an NFL season that grows weirder by the snap. Granted, most of the teams that many predicted would start well are playing great. Well, except the Bengals, whose offensive line can block anyone, not even on social media. With a staggering twenty-four teams sitting at .500 or better, this weekend’s action provides just a touch more clarity. Occurrences become habits quicker than one would think.

Broke In Las Vegas

After such high expectations from the media and fanbase, Las Vegas underperformed twice. They limp into Nashville winless. Now, before people want to assign blame to one player, understand that this failure is organizational. Vegas held a 20- 0 lead. You’d think they would score in the second half. Wrong, they came up shorter than Kevin Hart doing Army crawls. The offense retreated into a conservative shell. Whether the fault is Josh McDaniels’ or Derek Carr’s, the second half unraveled. Meanwhile, the retooled defense appeared a step off and the pass rush vanished. If you spend millions of dollars on the defensive line, expecting a return on investment seems rational. Maxx Crosby, with one sack and four quarterback hits, lead the team. A trip across the country could help. Ryan Tannehill hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass to a wide receiver in 2022. Sounds like a recipe for success.

South Beach Uprising

The Miami Dolphins offense torched the Baltimore Ravens’ secondary. Those words do not fall naturally across this laptop. However, the Dolphins destroyed Baltimore’s defensive backend. It begs the question, what should we make of Miami? Are they among the elite in the NFL? First, the passing offense looks lethal, but every other aspect of the team looks pedestrian, at best. The defense doesn’t rush the passer well and Xavien Howard looks like their only cornerback, capable of locking anyone down. Nik Needham allows 83 percent of targets in his direction. Be that as it may, Miami converts fifty-two percent of its third-downs. In keeping the drives alive, the Dolphins keep the vertical threats of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Grounded In Philadelphia

Earlier this week, my esteemed colleague, Ian Glendon, made the case for Jalen Hurts garnering MVP consideration. If you look at the other side of the ball, an entire group of ballhawks lurks in the secondary. Led by Darius Slay, the Eagles’ starting secondary smothers opposing wide receivers. Justin Jefferson tallied just forty-eight yards. In looking at the film, the reason becomes readily known. Up and down the secondary, Philadephia suggests something that many in the NFL preach but rarely practice: versatility. Unlike many secondaries, the Eagles employ interchangeable pieces that can play either spot back there, if needed. Sunday, they face a Commanders’ offense that ranks in the top ten in multiple passing categories. If Philly is, who they look like, this game will solidify that.

Prime Problem

When the NFL announced they sold their Thursday night broadcast rights to Amazon, the hope was for a seamless transition. You’d think a company that will deliver a souvenir beer stein two days after your purchase, could find a way to fix the streaming. Between all the buffering, it felt like I was using Limewire in 2003. The NFL is an elite property. Watching through pixelation does not help matters.
