NFL Rumors: Kendrick Bourne, Sean Payton, Green Bay Packers

The NFL trade deadline is just under two weeks away and the rumor mill is churning.

With six weeks down, the contenders and pretenders are starting to reveal themselves, although, this year more than ever, the middle-of-the-pack seems quite muddied. That could make for an interesting trade deadline as more and more teams hover around .500.

Then there are teams like the Panthers who have already traded one asset when they shipped disgruntled wide receiver Robbie Anderson to the Cardinals. Could Brent Burns or Christian McCaffrey be next?

Let’s take a look at the latest rumors circulating around the NFL.

New England Patriots – WR Kendrick Bourne

Rumor: Multiple teams have already reached out to the Patriots about WR Kendrick Bourne and he appears to be a name to keep an eye on as the deadline approaches, according to Jeremy Fowler.

Kendrick Bourne had a solid 2021 season with the Patriots making him a key candidate for another leap in production in 2022. However, it has been the exact opposite as Bourne has seen his usage drop behind  DeVante Parker, Jakobi Meyers, Nelson Algholor, and speedy rookie Tyquan Thornton. Owed just $3.5 million, Bourne would be a nice piece for a contender looking to add on a budget (Green Bay?) and, according to reports, he would welcome a change of scenery and more opportunities. In addition, Agholor’s name has also been floated in potential trade scenarios.

Head Coach Sean Payton Eyeing Chargers Job?

Rumor: Former Saints head coach and current Fox NFL analyst, Sean Payton, is reportedly eyeing the Los Angeles Chargers as his next destination, per Jason La Canfora.

It makes a lot of sense from Sean Payton’s point of view considering the presence of quarterback Justin Herbert. However, there is the issue of the Chargers currently having a head coach in Brandon Staley. That is not to say that the team is married to Staley long term and he certainly has had his share of issues that would make one question if he were the right person for the job. From a football standpoint, it would be an absolute slam-sunk upgrade to replace Staley with Payton. Since Payton is relatively young, it would give him another opportunity to work with a generational talent at quarterback for the majority of their career.

Are The Green Bay Packers Seeking Help At Wide Receiver?

Rumor: According to Jeremy Fowler, the Green Bay Packers are looking for help at the wide receiver position ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

Among the names mentioned that could be of some interest are Chase Claypool, Kendrick Bourne, Denzel Mims, Nelson Agholor, and Marquez Callaway. It makes sense that the Packers are looking to upgrade their receiving group after losing Davante Adams in the offseason and Randall Cobb to an ankle injury in a loss to the Jets. Even before the Cobb injury, adding a wide receiver for Aaron Rodgers seemed like an urgent need considering the team’s struggles on offense. At 3-3, they are by no means out of the picture but, if their offense continues to be as anemic as it has been, they will quickly be on the outside looking in of the playoff picture. With no obvious options currently on the roster, scouring the trade market may be the best option for the Packers.
