NFL 2022: Five Key Statistics for Week 7

For the second straight week, four teams will be taking some time off. But this is a pretty formidable quartet in the 6-0 Philadelphia Eagles, 5-1 Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings, as well as the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

As for the 28 clubs in action, there are some striking numbers indeed.

Last week at Seattle, the Arizona Cardinals’ offense failed to score a touchdown in 19-9 loss. Reaching the end zone has been an issue for Kliff Kingsbury’s team early in games, outscored a combined 41-3 in the first quarter this year. But the real problem has been winning in general. A season ago, the Cards opened 2021 with seven straight wins. Since then and including a playoff loss to the Rams, Kingsbury’s club owns a combined 6-11 record.

Talk about some interesting scheduling. This isn’t breaking news, but the Indianapolis Colts will be playing their fifth divisional game in seven weeks when they travel to Nashville to take on resurgent Tennessee. Frank Reich’s team is suddenly one game above .500 after a 1-2-1 start. Their last loss was a 24-17 home setback to the Titans in Week 4. All told, Mike Vrabel’s club has won four straight meetings vs. the Colts – by a combined score of 128-90.

You know your defense is in trouble when you play one less game than all but three others teams in the league and have still allowed the most points in the NFL. The Detroit Lions have surrendered 170 points in five contests – an average of 34 points per contest. It’s very early but those kinds of numbers are nothing new for this franchise. The 1981 Baltimore Colts allowed an NFL-record 533 points – followed by the Lions in 2020 (519) and 2008 (517).

The Kansas City Chiefs have won six straight AFC West titles. And Andy Reid’s club is tied atop the division with the Chargers via a 4-2 record. Andy Reid’s team leads the league in scoring with 179 points. The Chiefs’ offensive unit has reached the end zone 21 times – 17 of those scores via the arm of Patrick Mahomes. But only seven teams in the NFL have allowed more points per game. And no club has given up more scores through the air (15) in 2022.

What has gotten into the NFC East? There are only 10 teams in the league (just 4 in the NFC) that own a winning record after six weeks of play and the Eagles (6-0), Giants (5-1) and Cowboys (4-2) are three of them. The NFC East currently owns a combined 17-7 record. In 2021, the four clubs combined for a 32-32 mark. And there’s the dismal 2020 season, when the quartet combined for a 23-40-1 record and Washington won the division with a 7-9 mark.
