NFL 2022: Five Key Statistics for Week 8

It’s been a busy few days around the league, particularly when it comes to player movement. The New York Jets lost rookie running back Breece Hall to a torn ACL. But they were able to obtain James Robinson from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Philadelphia Eagles gave the Chicago Bears a fourth-round pick for pass-rusher Robert Quinn. Will the NFC East leaders see their sack numbers increase? There’s already some interesting numbers when it comes to the Birds in Week 8.

It’s the exact number of losses this season for six of the 14 playoff participants in 2021: The Patriots, Raiders, Packers, Buccaneers, 49ers and Cardinals. In the case of Green Bay and Tampa Bay, it’s the total amount of regular-season losses for the two clubs with the NFL’s best record (13-4) a year ago. The Pack is in the midst of the first three-game losing streak of the Matt LaFleur Era. The Bucs have dropped four of their last five contests after a 2-0 start.

Nick Sirianni’s club had Week 7 loss. And obviously, that means the Eagles are the lone 6-0 team in the league this season. Flashback to the club’s 31-15 loss to the Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs. Philadelphia was shut out for three quarters and committed three turnovers in the 16-point setback. This season, quarterback Jalen Hurts has thrown a pair of interceptions and the team has yet to lose a fumble – hence an NFL-low two turnovers.

The 5-2 Jets are riding a four-game winning streak and have already have more victories than they did in 2021. The 3-4 Patriots are the only team in the AFC East with a losing record. But this has been a very lopsided series as of late as Bill Belichick’s club has defeated the Green and White 12 consecutive times dating back to 2016. Over that span, the Pats have outscored the Jets by a combined 378-133 score. And that’s a scoring differential of plus-245.

Thought to be contender to win the AFC South, the Colts own a disappointing 3-3-1 record after seven weeks. But Frank Reich’s squad owns a dismal 1-3-1 mark vs. its division rivals. Veteran Matt Ryan (now benched) was supposed to be the answer at quarterback. However, he’s thrown nine interceptions and lost three of his 11 fumbles – hence 12 of Indianapolis’ 14 turnovers. In 17 outings in 2021, Reich’s club gave up the football 19 times.

Entering Week 6, the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills had each allowed an NFL-low 61 points. And in those first five games, Kyle Shanahan’s club limited four of their opponents to under 300 yards while giving up just five offensive touchdowns. But it’s been a different story the past two Sundays at Atlanta and at home vs. Kansas City. The Falcons and Chiefs combined to score 72 points. And DeMeco Ryan’s defense allowed nine offensive TDs.
