NFL 2022: Five Key Statistics for Week 9

There’s still just one unbeaten team in the NFL this season. The 7-0 Philadelphia Eagles get Week 9 started when they travel to Houston to take on the 1-5-1 Texans on Thursday night.

There are six teams off this week. There’s also a playoff rematch in Tampa between two clubs that are having their issues as of late. And there’s some interesting statistics when it comes to the matchup…and more.

It’s always tough to repeat. Eight weeks into the season, both defending conference champions have each dropped four games. In the case of the 4-4 Cincinnati Bengals, three of those setbacks have come within the division. Zac Taylor’s club fell at Baltimore and at Cleveland while losing in Week 1 in overtime at home vs. the Steelers. Meanwhile, the defending Super Bowl champion Rams are 3-4, with three of those losses by xx-plus points.

The team with the best record in the NFL has gained the third-most total yards per game in the league and is tied with the Bills in allowing the third-fewest yards per game in the NFL. Along with their balanced offense, the Philadelphia Eagles are tied with the Patriots for the most takeaways in the league (16). But the Birds have done that in just seven games. A season ago and including the playoffs, the Eagles forced 16 turnovers in 18 contests.

It is the number of Vikings’ quarterback Kirk Cousins. And he has been a big reason that his team and the Buffalo Bills are tied for the best record in the league at 6-1. It’s also the ranking of Minnesota’s run defense (although Kevin O’Connell’s team is giving up the fourth-most passing yards per game in the NFL). But ponder the fact that the rival Packers (29th), Lions (30th) and Bears (31st) are all near the bottom when it comes to stopping the run.

It’s a battle of AFC division leaders on Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium as the Chiefs host the Titans. Both clubs own identical 5-2 records but it’s Tennessee that’s riding a five-game winning streak. And talk about offensive similarities, sort of? So far, Titans’ running back Derrick Henry has totaled 166 carries for 755 yards and seven touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Chiefs as a team have 167 running plays for 751 yards and seven TDs this season.

The Buccaneers are 1-5 in their last six games after a 2-0 start. The Rams are 1-3 after a 2-1 start. The teams clash on Sunday at Tampa in a rematch of last season’s playoff win by Sean McVay’s team, 30-27. In two games vs. the Bucs in 2021, Matthew Stafford threw for a combined 709 yards and six TDs without an interception. And including that postseason victory, the Rams have won the last three meetings between the clubs dating back to 2020.
