The New York Mets made the Edwin Diaz signing official. That was their first order of business in free agency. Then they picked up the $14 million dollar option on Carlos Carrasco. Next on the list is multiple Cy Young Award winner, Jacob deGrom. He has met with the Atlanta Braves but the Mets are talking to him. Steven Cohen tweeted about him so I think it’s a matter of deGrom’s camp figuring out what his market value is and the Mets will gladly pay it. Somewhere between $40 and 45 million for 3-5 years will get it done. He will soon be 35, so this could be his last big contract.
Mets Hit List
The New York Mets could use an upgrade in the outfield, or second base, then
Jeff McNeil plays one of those positions. An upgrade at third base and a 7th-inning bullpen stud could do it. Maybe one more starter but that’s it. Outfielder,
Joc Pederson could be a solid replacement for
Brandon Nimmo if he signs with the Colorado Rockies and that’s possible.
Starling Marte moves to center and that’s that. Pederson hits 25 home runs yearly and has a good arm and is a good fielder. A lefty who could protect
Pete Alonso in the lineup.

The Mets Need a Bullpen Upgrade
In the bullpen, a name to consider is
Alex Colome. He was with the Colorado Rockies last season so ignore the stats. He can close if necessary and the righty can throw 60 innings out of the bullpen. The Mets need that kind of relief pitcher so they can lighten the Diaz load and bring him into clean innings.
Trea Turner is a terrific shortstop.
Bryson Stott is an up-and-coming shortstop in Philadelphia. Somebody would have to move? Turner would solve the Phillies’ leadoff issue. He adds more speed and another contact hitter to offset the home run crew they have currently who slowed down in the World Series. This seems logical and Harper is good at recruiting. The Mets may have an interest in Turner as well. He would have to agree to play second base for them with
Francisco Lindor at shortstop.
Brewers Need A Starter
What about
Taijuan Walker? He throws hard enough. He’s a 150-inning pitcher. Even though he is a Scott Boras client, will anyone pay more than $15 million a year for him? I don’t think so. If the Brewers are smart, they could hang around with interest and get him at a good rate. He’s only 30. If not, I can see the Braves having interest when deGrom ditches them.
