Jacob deGrom Still The Biggest Pitching Free Agent

One can argue that Justin Verlander could be the biggest free-agent pitcher on the market. That’s possible, but statistically, Jacob deGrom is the guy. Who will sign first? It will be deGrom, and then Verlander will either fill the void on the Mets if deGrom leaves, or he will go back to Houston. I think both of those are possible. It seems like deGrom is just about done shopping around, and I think he signs by the beginning of December. I think it will be with the Mets.

Joc Pederson Back in San Francisco

Joc Pederson was on the free agent market for a very short time. He was one of two players that signed the $19.5 million-dollar qualifying offer. Rangers starter Martin Perez was the other. Pederson hit 23 home runs with 70 RBI and a .274 batting average with solid fielding and a good arm. He went for the big paycheck over the multi-year deal that would have been a lower AAV. In the end, the Giants needed Pederson back in the outfield, and Pederson is likely to reproduce this season to get a bigger payday next year.

Brandon Nimmo Has Suitors

Brandon Nimmo has real suitors in the Colorado Rockies, the Yankees, and maybe the Blue Jays if I believe that one. I doubt he would consider going there. Like most of Steven Cohen’s former employees, he’s seeking a significant raise. I get it. As a leadoff hitter, he’s good but not elite. He’s not elite at anything, but he is very good at everything except for stealing bases. Six years, $130 million might be the number. The Mets shouldn’t go over that because they could put Starling Marte in centerfield and Jeff McNeil as the leadoff hitter and not miss a beat, honestly. Filling an outfield position isn’t hard. Nimmo is a heart and soul player, he hustles, and fans love him so the Mets will push hard and eventually keep him.

Rafael Devers Could Go To Flushing

The New York Mets need a third baseman. Sound familiar? They have Eduardo Escobar, but Devers could play DH, and that would keep the corner spot open for this Red Sox regular. When healthy, he can hit 20 home runs and drive in 100. His OPS and on-base percentages are good, and he’s only 26. For a little over 11 million dollars for one season, the Mets would have to give up two prospects or maybe a current pitcher like Tylor Megill or David Petersen and a prospect. I would consider doing that if he locks up long-term in Flushing.

The market is still flush with stars. Let’s see where they do.
