2023 Raiders Draft Prospect: WR Jonathan Mingo

The Raiders’ offense for all of their explosiveness, still needs a complementary receiver on the outside. Mingo’s physicality fits the bill.

Stats

Route Running/Hands

Mingo never had to sell intricate routes in Oxford. Under those circumstances, he needs to expand the route tree. Screens, flies, and underneath appears to be his forte. Despite this, with his speed, you’d like to see cleaner double moves and combination routes that would can separate, like crossers and levels. At the snap, the prospect must not dance. Instead, foot forward to explode into the route. With this in mind, the prospect will catch away from his body and displays a full catch radius to adjust to different catch angles. However, he will need to develop the concentration to follow the ball through tight spaces and opponents, as those bobbles will become drops.

Speed/Agility

First, the negatives. Mingo will not out quick cornerbacks. His frame prevents that sort of twitch and agility. At the same time, he does display enough nimbleness in the open field to change the pursuit angle for defenses. Now, to the overall positives. The Mississippi standout will most certainly run by defenses with his long strides. Most importantly, the wideout will thrive on a jump ball, with the ability to time his leap and fight for the ball.

Intangibles

Mingo lives to do the dirty work. If the ball is not thrown his way or a running play happens, expect Mingo to block with not only technique but anger that takes the defender out of the play. While quarterbacks appreciate his pass-catching acumen, running back cherish his ability to manhandle would-be tackles. When Lane Kiffin speaks, some people take his words with a metric ton of salt. Yet, he is downright effusive with Mingo.

Raiders Fit

Granted, Mack Hollins showed big-play ability, but at twenty-nine years of age, how much of that ability will carry to the other side of thirty? Davante Adams will see constant coverage rolled his way. As a result, a playmaker like Mingo can exploit single coverage. The entire field is open for Mingo. With stern drilling and route polishing, the Ole Miss wideout could work himself into a first-day starter role. Furthermore, the red zone could be a sweet spot for Mingo, where his frame would torture smaller wideouts and create throwing windows. Additionally, Mingo may not cost a high pick at this point. In essence, Mingo could become what the team thought Bryan Edwards was.
