Collecting Cy Young Award winners doesn’t guarantee a championship. The Mets lost a multiple-winner in Jacob deGrom and gained a three-time winner in Justin Verlander.

Mets Just Putting Off The Inevitable

Verlander is 40 in February and Max Scherzer will be 39 in July. Scherzer can be a free agent in 2024 if he’s going to turn down 43 million but that’s doubtful so he has two more years and Verlander has two plus an option for a third. That’s the Mets’ future at the top of the rotation instead of trying to invest in younger pitching because their home-grown pitchers haven’t cut it. Mets GM, Billy Eppler wants a sustainable winner and this isn’t the way to go about it.

Verlander’s Postseason Didn’t Match The Regular Season

Verlander finally got his first World Series win in a game that he survived. He gave up a run over five innings in Game 6. In Game 1, he had the lead and left the game when the score was 5-5. He threw a lot of pitches in both, so the pitches are there. He will start 30 or so games, that’s great. But getting him to pitch like that regular-season destroyer in the postseason will be a challenge.

Brandon Nimmo Is The Next Piece

The Mets have to either go all in for Nimmo or move on before the outfielders on the market get snapped up now that the Winter Meetings are upon us. Nimmo won’t hang around forever hoping his former employer signs him. I’m sure a piece of him wants to remain a Met and another piece wants all the money the Colorado Rockies can throw at him.

The Phillies Signed Trea Turner

The Phillies signed the talented shortstop to an 11-year, $300 million dollar contract with a full no-trade clause. It keeps the AAV down and skirts the luxury tax a bit, He is reunited with former Washington Nationals teammate, Bryce Harper. Now the Phillies sure up their fielding and got a leadoff hitter while pushing Kyle Schwarber down in the lineup adding great flexibility there. They are the class of the Metro division at the moment.

The Cardinals and Braves Could Try to Get Sean Murphy

To get Murphy away from the Oakland A’s, would take a lot. Both of these teams have enough prospects to do it. Some call him an elite defensive backstop and his strikeout rate is fairly low. He has good power, so both teams could use him. Let’s see what happens.
