NFL 2022: Five Key Statistics for Week 14 -

Five weeks remaining in the NFL’s 103rd campaign and no team has clinched a playoff appearance to date. That could change this week for the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings. In any case, it figures to be another intriguing set of games in what has been another fascinating season.

This is the final week of midseason vacation time for teams as the NFL will feature a 16-game slate for the final four weeks. Worth noting that five of the six clubs not taking the field this Thursday, Sunday or Monday night sport losing records. While the Falcons (5-8), Bears (3-10), Packers (5-8), Colts (4-8-1) and Saints (4-9) are below .500, the surprising 7-5-1 Washington Commanders are the one team not playing that has managed a winning record.

One year after winning Super Bowl LVI, the Los Angeles Rams are in last place in the NFC West and in the midst of a six-game losing streak. Sean McVay has suffered his first losing season as an NFL head coach. The club owns a 3-9 record with five games to play. The only previous Super Bowl champion to lose at least 10 games the year after winning it all were the 1998 Denver Broncos. The club captured Super Bowl XXXIII but finished 6-10 in 1999.

Last Sunday in Baltimore, the Ravens came back to beat the Broncos, 10-9. On Monday night at Tampa, the Buccaneers rallied to beat the Saints, 17-16. That means after 13 weeks and 195 regular-season contests, there have been 13 games decided by a single point. That’s almost twice as many one-point decisions as a year ago (7). Dating back to the 1970 merger, the most one-point games in a season came way back in 1988 (19 in 224 games).

The pendulum has certainly swung. There was a time when the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t defeat the Denver Broncos. From 2012 through the teams’ first encounter in 2015, the Men from Mile High defeated Romeo Crennel (2) and then Andy Reid’s club (5) a combined seven consecutive times. But the Chiefs are now in the midst of a 13-game winning streak in this AFC West rivalry. And that includes seven straight wins at Denver dating back to ’15.

Kliff Kingsbury’s squad returns to action on Monday night after a week off and hosts the New England Patriots. It’s been a rough year for a Cardinals’ team that has unfortunately picked up where it dropped off last season. Arizona won its first seven games in 2021. But that success is but a distant memory. Including last year’s playoff loss to the Rams, Kingsbury’s club has lost almost twice as many games (15) as it has won (8) since that strong 7-0 start.
