The Chicago Bears’ opponent this week, the Philadephia Eagles, provide them the blueprint on how to quickly rebuild and become title contenders.
As we all know, the Chicago Bears are in the midst of yet another rebuild. It seems that they’ve been trying to rebuild for the past four decades. This time, it is up to general manager Ryan Poles, his front office, and head coach Matt Eberflus to get it right.
Poles has taken some heat for not building a proper roster this season. He was very conservative in free agency, not spending much money. He also got rid of some popular players.
While the product on the field is bad (they hold a 3-10 record) this season, they are certainly in great shape going into the next offseason. They have some young players who received some valuable experience and have the most salary cap space in the league. Additionally, they not only have some draft picks but also valuable draft picks. They currently have the third overall pick and that is a very important pick. They pick early in nearly every round, or they can trade a pick to acquire even more.
This will be perhaps the most important offseason in the history of the Chicago Bears. They have the assets to quickly turn things around and put the team on the path to relevancy again. This is a once mighty team and deserves to return to that glory.
Bears could look to their next opponent for the rebuilding blueprint
The Bears could look at this week’s opponents — the Philadelphia Eagles — for a blueprint for rebuilding quickly.
The Eagles were Super Bowl champions in the 2017 season. From that point on, things were a mess. By 2020, they were in salary cap hell and had only had four wins all season.
In the 2021 offseason, the Eagles had about $52 million in dead cap space. They also were over the cap and had big decisions to make on veterans and their big contracts.
Does that sound familiar?
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made the tough decisions. He traded tight end Zach Ertz and quarterback Carson Wentz. Additionally, he cut All-Pro defensive lineman Fletcher Cox, then re-signed him days later to a club-friendly deal.
Roseman went on to make nine draft picks. In addition, he traded for Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown. Brown currently has 1,020 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, helping the Eagles become an offensive powerhouse.
The pickup of Brown and the drafting of wide receiver DeVonte Smith really helped quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Hurts was the Eagles’ second-round pick in 2020. After the team traded Wentz, they decided to go with Hurts despite some experts’ doubts about his ability.
Of course, it is amazing how much better a quarterback seems when he has top-notch targets. With quality targets, Hurts now has the Eagles with a 12-1 record. Also, he is leading the highest-scoring offense in the league and the third-ranked offense overall.
Furthermore, Roseman did a good job of building a team that should compete for titles for some time. This is a very deep team. Take, for example. the defensive line. They can run 10-12 players. By doing that, they can wear down opposing offensive lines. They recently signed Ndamukong Suh. Suh is one of the most ferocious defensive players in the league. He hadn’t played until the Eagles signed him. He is working himself into game-playing shape and should be a big help in Philadelphia’s playoff run.
These moves are similar to what Poles is doing with the Bears. He shipped out veterans like Khalil Mack. The moves gave the Bears a dead cap of over $87 million this season but freed up about $125 million to spend in 2023.
Poles also traded for wide receiver Chase Claypool to help young quarterback Justin Fields. Additionally, he added a lot of rookies who are getting valuable experience. Offensive lineman Braxton Jones, for example, went from a fifth-round draft pick trying to make the team to becoming a key player on the offensive line. There is also linebacker Jack Sanborn, who is playing excellent ball since the Bears traded Roquan Smith at the trade deadline.
Poles is expected to help Fields and the offense some more through the draft. More than that, though, he will also get help for the defense. With a number of high-quality picks, he could trade down and acquire many more picks, just like Roseman did.
The Chicago Bears could suffer a blowout loss to Philadelphia this week. However, they could end up winning the future by following the Eagles’ blueprint on how to quickly rebuild a team.
