There are four weeks remaining in the NFL’s 2022 regular season. There are no more off weeks and all 32 clubs have played 13 games this year.
One is the loneliest number as the 12-1 Philadelphia Eagles are the only club to clinch a playoff spot so far. That could change in a big way as the Bills, Chiefs, Cowboys, Vikings and 49ers can join the postseason party with victories. A few of those teams are connected with some very interesting statistics.
It wasn’t all that long ago that there was some head-scratching going on in San Francisco. Kyle Shanahan’s team lost back-to-back games to the Falcons and Chiefs and allowed a combined 72 points in those setbacks. Injuries did play a part in those defensive performances. But the San Francisco 49ers have now won six straight games, limited each opponent to 17 or fewer points and given up a combined 64 points during this current streak of success.

Kevin O’Connell’s club has been riding high this season during his debut as an NFL head coach. The Minnesota Vikings own a 10-3 record and are one win away from clinching the NFC North. But it’s amazing to note that this club owns a minus-1 scoring differential for the season – totaling 312 points while surrendering 313 points. Talk about an odd case of déjà vu? In 2021, the Purple Gang finished 8-9, scored 425 points, and allowed 426 points.
A year ago, the Jacksonville Jaguars forced an NFL-low nine turnovers during a 3-14 campaign. With a victory over the visiting Cowboys, the club can double its win total from a year ago. One of the keys to improvement for Doug Pederson’s club has been coming up with takeaways. That was a major weakness in 2021 when the Jaguars came up with a league-low nine takeaways. But 13 games into this season, Pederson’s squad has forced 20 turnovers.
Nick Sirianni’s club not only owns the NFL’s best record at 12-1, but the payoff-bound Philadelphia Eagles are the league’s highest-scoring team with 386 points. The Birds are tied for second in the NFL in rushing yards and the NFC East leaders lead the NFL with 27 rushing touchdowns. The league record for rushing TDs in a season is 36 by the 1962 Green Bay Packers. That team finished 13-1 and won an NFL championship under Vince Lombardi.
Last season, the New York Jets (4-13), Baltimore Ravens (8-9), Jacksonville Jaguars (3-14), Denver Broncos (7-10), New York Giants (4-13), Detroit Lions (3-13-1), Carolina Panthers (5-12) and Seattle Seahawks (7-10) all finished in last place in their respective divisions and combined for a 41-94-1 mark. This season, only the Broncos have failed to win as many or more games than they did a year ago. Now 14 weeks into 2022, the clubs’ record is 49-54-1.
