Most humans were sleeping when the news broke that Carlos Correa signed a 12-yr, $315 million deal – – to play third base.
That’s right. Francisco Lindor’s best friend will play the corner position, and that’s a massive upgrade for the Mets. That’s been lost in the whining and analysis of whether this was smart or will work out.
Correa And The San Francisco Giants
When the Correa press conference was canceled yesterday, I raised an eyebrow. I knew the Mets threw in a last-minute offer to Correa, but it wasn’t enough cabbage. However, the reason that was stated was he “failed a physical”. Again, the Giants have their doctors and the Mets have theirs. In the end, whoever has the best doctor will win this one.
Al Harazin Bought A Team That Failed
The Mets had the worst team money can buy in 1992. The Mets signed Brett Saberhagen, Vince Coleman, and Eddie Murray. Bobby Bonilla was on the team the year before. The Mets payroll was sky-high at $44, 352, 002. Today that would buy you a Justin Verlander, and you would have some change left over.

The New York Mets infield in 1999 had John Olerud at first, Edgardo Alfonzo and second base, Rey Ordonez at shortstop, and Robin Ventura at third base. The combined infield made 33 errors, the second-lowest total all-time in a full-length season. Now The Mets Spend Like The Yankees Used To
Sure, and when was that an issue? It was to some Mets fans and now that the Yankees don’t do that the worm has turned. Did Cohen ever say he was going to curtail his spending forever? No, he’s a risk-taker in his business and now his baseball team. Whoever was expecting something different hasn’t paid attention to his career and his tweets.
Braves Fans Are Whining
The Atlanta Braves lost Dansby Swanson and I guess they’ve now turned to the Mets to release that anger. Ok, Atlanta, have at it. The Braves have bought plenty of talent over the years, maybe not this much, but most World Series are bought. It’s very hard to have a championship team mostly full of home-grown players, especially nowadays. Mets ownership saw this year as an opportunity to press down on the gas pedal, and the rest of the NL East better be ready for that. That goes for fans and players. The Mets are the new ‘Evil Empire”, but that’s how true New York businessmen play that game.
